It seems as the "limit" lies in the maximum number of Menu items
(instruments) that your OS
allows. Under WinXP there's around a 10000 items limit, while Win2k around
15000.
Have no idea about MacOS
After that amount of instruments, the menu will simply not open.
You can still access any EXS instrument menu from the "control" view of EXS
(but it's very slow)
Annoying.. i hope Emagic can find a solution around this..

Subject: [exs] EXS file limit?

I have a SampleCell library that is quite vast (50Gb and >200.000 files). I
made aliases of it and put in the "Sampler Instruments" folder in the Logic
folder. It has worked fine until I added a couple of more files to the
library.

Now I can\ufffdt get any instruments to load into EXS24. The instruments get
converted from SC as usual, but then there is only the initial lines where
the name of the instrument should show up, and only the init sine wave is
sounding.

When I remove a couple of aliases it works fine again. It seems like there
is a limit of how many files EXS24 can keep track of. Is this a bug or a
feature? Mac OS related maybe? Is there a workaround?

And no prelistening and no SampleCell access here :-(

There should be an option to load sounds through an ordinary dialog with
prelisten, easily accessible from the front page of EXS. In this dialog
there should be samples and instruments showing to the left and samples used
by any selected instrument, to the right, with the ability to PRELISTEN any
sample through sound manager by hitting the space bar on/off, just like in
SampleCell. Agree?

This way we can also more easily select EXS instruments that are edited and
backed up by other songs.
