EML 200 Modular fun on YouTube

EML 200 Modular fun on YouTube

2008-03-08 by timothyconrardy

Someone caught me at the Analouge Heaven meeting last year(in Oakland,
CA, USA)and put up these video's on You Tube.

(Thats my CB device I made)

It's me and my trusty EML200-Yamaha setup
I was doing a search for EML there, and these video's came up..cool!
I'm famous now! :-)

The yamaha cs5 was in a fire and all the keys were pretty burned..so I
colored them for fun:-)It actually interfaces very well with the EML.
( same volt per octave kind of thing)
However, there is an issue right now with the EML ( and I started to
explain it in the video, but was cut off) Theres an 'extra' sound in
the osc tone..it's like it's being ring modulated. It almost sounds
like a grounding issue. BUT..it adds to the gritting biting tone.
Lately I have been putting it thru a Behringer Tweakalizer with it's 3
filters and envelope follower and other effects..and it's a good match
as well.

The EML has some unique modules in it..one is that electronic switch
which I was demoing. It also has an ENV, Ring Mod, AMP mod and
pushbutton pulser, and the Sample Hold rate all in one module. I made
a VAZ Modular model of it, but it's not the same as grabbing those big
knobs.

A funny coincidence when I was there at the AH meeting. I had brought
my original patch book of the EML with receipt when I got it in
1977.(from EMSA ) The guy that had signed the receipt was there at the
AH meeting..and I had a lot of fun meeting him and talking..what a
trip to say the least!

Hello Tim,

What coincidences!
For years, I've had an Atari site bookmarked, run by a Tim Conrardy,
which I check periodically.
Recently, I printed out the copies of "Synapse" magazine, which have
been made available (thanks guys!) to us online. I recall reading a
letter to the editor by a Tim Conrardy.
I would not have guessed it was _such_ a common name!
Thanks for the Youtube links.
My very first experience with synthesizers was with an EML 101, 200 &
400, when I got to borrow them for a month (Xmas vacation) from Auburn
University, in about 1974. I've been distracted for decades by a fun
day job, but I never lost my fondness for synths. I have an Oberheim
FVC, Yamaha TX816 (full), 2 Synergy DXIIs, Roland MKS-80, MKS-70,
Casio VZ-10(&8)M, and many others (the day job has benefits!) I love
the EMLs, but the Electrocomps I've seen for sale lately, have been
very pricey. I've been building my own substitute, using a
combination of PAiA 9700s & Blacet modules (& when I have time, some
things from "Electronotes".
Now, about reducing the EML 200 hum - try teaching it the lyrics!
I may be the last person who joined this site, before you. But....

Welcome Tim! I'm pleased to be a member of a group that includes you!
Thanks for the benefits I have gleaned from you over the years!

yeah..thats me, and its a great free resource

You can now run all that stuff on PC via an Atari emulator called
Steem. If you have Midi-CV converters, you can use Tunesmith on an EML
synth!

Can you give me those links? I may have written them a letter, as I
was a subscriber. I would be VERY interested!!

Your welcpome, although I am still learning of course..and looks like
you have a good setup as well.

so..can anyone help me with my 'extra noise' issue?

Believe the "Bandwidth warning"! It took a long time to download, but
well worth it.
http://www.cyndustries.com/synapse/intro.cfm
Your letter in the March/April 1977 issue was about (you'll never
guess) the EML 200/300! It resides there with a letter from Barry
Klein, who, I assume, is the same BK who wrote the first book on
"Electronic Music Circuits" I ever read.

I suspect you already know the "usual suspects", but here ya go:
If the noise sounds like 60 Hz hum, accuse the power supply (always
accuse the power supply first, anyway).
Did it work just before you moved it and suddenly went wrong? If so,
look for a loose connection. If the noise arrived more gradually, try
the capacitors (it's about time to re-cap a 30+ year old, jeez! I'm
almost ready for a second re-cap, myself).
Another usual (not for your instrument, but in general) process -
re-seat the ICs in their sockets. If you find ICs in your EML stuff,
time travel is possible!

If anyone is interested in the Synapse downloads at
http://www.cyndustries.com/synapse/intro.cfm
be aware that not all pages of the issues are linked on the page
given, but they can be had by modifying the url with the missing page
numbers.
There are interviews from the '70s with R. Moog, T. Oberheim, K.
Stockhausen, Kraftwerk, you get the idea.
