This is the related link to your photo I think:
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electronic-music-instruments-electronic-music-production/624486-emu-emax-new-display.html

It's a VFD Display, but imho you should go for a OLED (WHY?: http://www.newhavendisplay.com/oled_page.html)

I have installed one as well and can tell you that it's awesome. Bought this one: http://www.ebay.de/itm/120984411634?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

My picture, taken with a phone, couldn't catch the actual brightness and contrast. To make a long story short - the OLED is (I've seen both) far better and far more advanced than a VFD.

That depends.
It is all about sizing and pinout compatibility, mostly.

So if I get one that's the right size and pinout it needn't be vfd?

Re: [emax] emax display

That is correct.

VFD can be brighter and have a longer life than OLED.
With that said- VFD have a glass housing. - susceptible to breaking- although if in studio environment is probably fine.
VFD also generate some heat, from my experience.

OLED can be gotten with exact pinout as a drop-in replacement.
I have never seen or found any VFD that are direct drop in.

OLED available in WHITE, BLUE, YELLOW.
