Iomega Jaz formatting problems. EMAX II Freezes

2010-06-07 by emax_dx5

Hi all.

After searching on the list, I can't find the right answer.

I've tried to format an Iomega Jaz disk (I have to say I am new to zip units).

What I got is after 20 min showing "FORMAT Disk. Verifying... " on the LCD, the EMAX got frozen with TRANSPOSE, DRIVE SELECT, ENTER, and DIGITAL PROCESSING, PRESET MANAGEMENT, PRESET DEFINITION lights on, and a lot of ?????????????? on the LCD.

After rebooting I lost the internal HD directory but after a new reboot, Things were fine as before.

New try with Terminator set to OFF and it didn't freeze, but no success with the formatting.

Then I try the first way again, and after the freeze and reboot, the EMAX finds the Jaz with the following details:
SCSI 2: iomega j
Avail: C08MB 99%

Now I try to copy an internal HD bank into the Iomega and get this message:
SCSI:
EOF Error!

Any suggestions? SCSI experts, come to me :)
Thanks.

SCIS details:
Iomega Jaz unit: Terminator set ON, SCSI number: #2
Zip Disk: 2 GB
Internal EMAX HD SCSI: #4

Have you verified that the SCSI internal HD the termination is OFF?

Set it to OFF and set Term on for Jaz.
There should only be 1 terminator on the bus.

Regards,
Ted

I can try to do that.
As far as I researched, the Jaz Drives work on the emax II with 2 mb disk (at least one user was able to work it).

The internal hd is a fujitsu. I have to check how is it for the termination on off, as I think it has not jumpers.
In case of being terminated now.. If I set it to non terminated, should it be any problem for the internal hd if I don't connect the External Jaz drive?

Thanks.

Yes- then you should add a terminator plug to outside of the unit.

I've done a test:
I disconnected the internal HD (both power supply and scsi cable) and plugged the Iomega Jaz with Auto Terminator function on (it is supposed it detects if the unit is the last on the chain and auto set the terminator).

I was able to format it successfully (at least, the emax ended saying "Loading Software" after formatting for about 40 min).

Then , some weird presets called W appears on the screen when I select the Drive. It seems to respond when I try to copy a bank in it, but the screen says again: "SCSI: EOF Error!" .

EOF stands for End Of File Error.

I will try to do some other test. If not success, I would be looking for another quick way to do some backup of my internal HD.

Have you tried another scsi cable to the zip? it could be a bad cable.

Definately worth trying another cable if you have one.. Also, if I remember rightly, the jaz drives are SCSI II which have the high-density 50 pin connectors.. check this as they are very easy to bend pins.. used to get a lot of that with old Pro-tools systems.
Have you tried the Jaz with any other devices?.. or a different disc?

Good luck
