Got an Emax 2 finally!

Got an Emax 2 finally!

2010-05-06 by Ted Summers

Went on ebay today and got one, finally.

It is in "AS IS" condition, so needs repair. But once that is done, I
will have one for using as well as testing.

Unless the echip is dead, I should be able to fix it.
Then if someone asks me a tech / repair question about Emax 2 at least
I can answer it!

:-)

Regards,
Ted

PS- are there schematics available for Emax 2 in the event I need them
for repair purposes?

Rob / Jammie any comment?

The Emax II does not have an E chip, it has a G chip for sample playback and an H chip for
filtering.

There is a service manual that someone bought and offered to the group members who needed it, but that idea seemed to fizzle....

I vaguely remember such a post. Ithought perhaps it was because there was a
charge for it.
That being said, I paid for the Emax 1 schematic, and would expect to have
to do the same for the Emax 2.

I am not looking for a freebie, so to speak.

Ted

fortunately for me I have a slim floppy and CF drive waiting to drop right
in there, so I won't have any issue for that one...

Congrats! Which model did you get? I see a lot of helpful posts coming out of this purchase regardless :)

I dunno. but I will find out.... :-)

So to be clear on what the options are:
1) If it is mono, is there an update to stereo?

2) If it has an expansion board, I can get an eeprom to update to 8M,
correct?
(ie by using the workaround used to fix scrambled megs posted to the group
shortly ago..burn a new EEPROM and socket it).

Ted

Re: Got an Emax 2 finally!

Yeah, as far as I know the EEPROM controls which upgrades the EMAX detects... as long as the hardware is there obviously. You might need to fill some sockets with DRAM if it's a 4MB model. If it's a 2MB I don't think it will have the board and you don't have any options besides stereo. The card reader makes loading banks a lot faster and once you get there, it will format a 1 GB card. The only problem I didn't realize until later is that it will only be able to use something like 400MB of it due to bank limitations. It's still more than plenty for me and flash is cheap.

If you run into any problems with the EEPROM image I would like to hear what they are. I haven't heard much since I uploaded it, so I guess it's working out. BTW I am running that image on a 9346B chip and it works fine. You might even have one laying around on an old modem card.

When I looked up that 9346B it was so cheap I will just get a few so I
have em in case anyone gets scrambled megs.
I will put it in with an order for other ICs and sockets, so no biggie.

Thanks,
Ted

Re: Got an Emax 2 finally!

2010-05-09 by Ted Summers

This is an Emax II 2201. 1MB of RAM.

Looks like it was left in storage for a long time.

Bad power switch- bypassed for testing, will replace.
Screwy display- reseated all ICs and we get the good display.

So far so good...
The Floppy drive is failing (CRC errors), so I can put in a slim floppy.
There is no HD- but I have a CF drive for it.

I hear some whistling noises as the floppy is chunking away in the
headphone outputs.
It may need some work on the PS then or re-cap it.... I can do that too.

It did boot, and I loaded in an Emax 1 disk after several attempts and
CRC errors on 3 disks.... I hear sounds in the headphones when I press
keys.

Some of the keys I have to press hard to get a response.

So here are the questions:

1) For the key presses- perhaps some cleaning needs to be performed?
I've never had to do this on my Baldwin IKE / Emax 1, as it was well
kept.
Any tips in relation to the cleaning process?
It has 3 broken keys, so I would assume during cleaning process that
would be the best time to replace them, correct?

2) It doesn't appear to have the Stereo upgrade.
Any way I can get this updated to Stereo?

3) I know without the Expander board I certainly cant get above 2MB.
If I get the ICs to make it 2MB on the main board will it see it, or
are new PALs required?

Just trying to figure out my options.
Or should I just wait again for something better to come along and
part this one out.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Ted

upon further inspection the keys aren't working properly because the
previous owner spilled liquid into the unit and it is all gummed up....
looks like a good cleaning will be the order of the day.
