Mainboard swapping

2009-10-10 by dhpb1973

Hi,

I have an Emax II Keyboard with 2 MB and an Emax II rack with 8 MB. Both work fine. I tried to swap mainboards but the keyboard doesn't boot with the rack MB. The upper line of the display shows black squares and all the buttons lights turn on. If i swap them again both Emaxes keep working. I noticed that the keyboard MB has an RN6 chip that the rack one doesn't have (the socket is empty on the rack MB). Any ideas of what that chip does ? Anyone knows which is the chip that store the sound memory size ?

Thanks,

Diego

I was once told by an Emu tech that the lights lighting up by each button are codes, certain buttons with light up for different issues. I believe if you pull a cable or disconnect the display or floppy drive on a normally working unit...at boot you will see certain button lights lit that corresponds to the issue.
Wish i had a cheat sheet on it.....

Richard,

Thanks for your answer :-). I found the diagnostics doc at the emulator archive. After some more testing, i managed to make the Emax II keyboard boot normally but it hangs after 4 or 5 seconds. Sometimes it shows garbarge at the LCD, some others it just stop respondig or all lights turn on. Since both mainboards work ok when not swapped i suppose i'm out of luck and somehow the MB of my KB and the MB of my Rack are incompatible. :-(

Well the rack version would not have a KPC control, (keyboard pressure controller) nor would it have the mod wheel controllers.

Are both OS matched? Many hopes you get this setup working, but if not, at least you could use the rack unit as where you send the sounds out from and use the 2mb Keyboard as your controller. The MIDI in/out/through should be able to control the rack unit. A little cumbersome but think of your total setup as a 10mb system. Great for layering.

As far as I can recall, both keyboard and rack versions have the same scanner sub cpu (a Rockwell's custom chip called R1125) who translate all the commands from the keys/buttons/controllers to the main CPU.

Recently, a fellow member posted a thread talking about a board swapping with success. It should work, but maybe there is some compatibility issues between the Main board and the audio board.
