formatting emax II zip with pc?

2009-03-26 by Phreak boy

hello, does anyone know how i can format a zip file on the pc for an emax II? My emax II can see my iomega zip drive and can read the size of it...but when i try to format it it says...Drive Not Formatted...any ideas? also worst case scenario...is it possible to format it using some software on the pc...as i would like to use emxp..and i think that only read and writes zip drives..doesnt format them

thanks a lot!

What model of Zip drive is it? Is the write protect enabled on the Zip
disk? Is the Zip drive terminated? Is there more than one device enabled
with the same SCSI ID#? Could the Zip disk be corrupted?

Zip drives are known to die from time to time so, there is the possibility
that the heads have been damaged even though the Emax sees the device.

Hi there
thank you for your help
the zip drive is fine, i can load samples into another sampler using it. I can format zips with it using the other sampler. Its one of those iomega 100 blue ones which reads 100mb zip files....I have been using new zip disks. i guess if it works on one sampler, it should work on another...no other scsi devicdes are being used
does anyone know a way of formatting an emax II zip on a pc?

also when you have termination on you have to set it to id 5

the plus drives are better and they work off of the parallel aswell as scsi

all firmwares work with the akais

I apologize in advance if this sounds obvious, but are you booting off
another ZIP when trying to format the ZIP on the Emax II?

The reason I ask is because the "Disk Not Formatted" message sounds
suspiciously like the Emax is trying to load the "format disk"
software module from SCSI, and then realizing the ZIP isn't formatted.

Have you tried booting from the Floppy first, (with the ZIP already in
the drive), and then tried formatting making sure the software is
being loaded from floppy?

Re: formatting emax II zip with pc?

2009-03-27 by esynthesist

When I developped the Emax-II part of EMXP, I did quite a lot of experiments to format ZIP disks on a PC for the Emax-II. The physical disk parameters of an Emax-II formatted ZIP disk are well known - that's not the issue - but when I tried to use these parameters in my formatting program, the format process always failed when it tried to format the very last tracks (the ones which are not used by Windows/DOS on ZIP disks). That's why EMXP does not include the physical format option.
So far I only managed to use ZIP disks on my Emax-II which had been formatted by the Emax-II first, or by a Mac (system 7 or lower). But not all disks formatted by the Mac could be used, only some of them... strange.

Once you have formatted the ZIP disk on the Emax-II, EMXP can write complete disk images to that disk for use on the Emax-II. But that won't help you of course :-)
You may try to write such an image to a "random" Dos/Mac formatted ZIP disk you have somewhere, but the chance is small that the Emax-II will recognize the disk. EMXP has a menu option to generate such an empty Emax-II ZIP disk image, which contains all indexes and other things which are also generated by the Emax-II format process. But as mentioned before, this "logical formatted disk" is only usable if you also have a "physical formatted disk".

Re: formatting emax II zip with pc?

2009-03-28 by Phreak boy

thank yhou for your assistance....much appreciated!t would probably have been the

shame i cannot format the zip on the pc as that would have been the easiest option.

i formatted a floppy using emxp and then put os 2.14 from this forum on the floppy with emxp.
i boot the emax with the floppy (dont know if this is of relevance, but not all the options work with this os...for example bird run in master says 'difference release' )
i use an iomega 100 zip drive (scsi 5). Initially it asks for the os to be copied from, which is the floppy disk.....and then it asks os to copy to ...so i select scsi 5 and the zip drive comes into life and the emax sees the 100mb disk. then when i press yes, it works for about 2 seconds and then says drive not formatted.

also, i have an apple 300e plus cd player and it doesnt seem to read this either, it says non emax II disk. Ive seen that this cd player is ok for the emax. I even placed the os on the cd image. doenst make any difference

is there a diagnostics i can run to make sure the scsi port is funtioning ok?

i supposed worst case scenario, i can ask someone to format some zips disks for me
