rs422 to USB?

rs422 to USB?

2009-03-14 by alancurrall

I was considering SCSI-fy-ing my EMAX SE but am loath to undertake the risk, expense and time involved. However, I was thinking of the RS422 port and the fact that you can buy cheap RS422 to USB adapters. Has anyone ever tried going this route, or is it impossible for the EMAX to look for storage devices at the port?

This isn't possible as far as I know.

But: vintage macs can be connected to the interface. Sound designer for Emax Software (VERY RARE but still to find) provides bank swapping and editing in full effect (you need a special emax OS which can be downloaded on the EMXP homepage for free).

For mass storage and studio use, this is a perfect solution, as any SCSI medium can handle just 36 banks.

I would do this if only I could find a copy of Sound Designer for Emax. Isn't it one of those obsolete programs that's just impossible to track down?
Alan
BTW Thanks Jammie for fixing my LCD panel. My recommendation of your repair services goes out to the rest of the group.

Really? Ah, I always thought the Emax (I) can only handle 36 Banks via SCSI at one time.

Sound Designer for Emax is pretty rare indeed.
But there's a guy who is still selling it. See
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/emax/message/3741
Although not a member of this group anymore, he can still be contacted on his yahoo email account (ingsoc_1979 at yahoo dot com) and is still willing to provide the software as far as I know.
Note that you'll have to pay for the software, so the total cost will be the cost of the Mac and the cost of the software (they're both at about the same level, USD 40-50 for each I guess).
Remember you'll also need a modified version of the Emax OS, which is only available for SE and Plus editions. (I've put them on the EMXP website).
Also, the SD for Emax software function which uploads and downloads banks only works with the Emax-I, not with the Emax-II.

The RS422-USB idea has been discussed on this group and the Emulator II group a while ago. I have tried many USB-RS422 devices with only limited success. Some members are now trying to make a specific device which should work for Emu samplers. Standard USB to serial devices can not be used.

Plus: you still have to invest in a zip drive that is dedicated for the Sound Designer software, as the physical medium serves like a copy protection and must be inserted during operation.

Wow! I never got around to using my Atari's for music. I've got a few ST's and a Falcon. But they are all packed in boxes for a few years now.
