How do you overdub? Is it possible to record more than one sound on a sequence? __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Personals. http://personals.yahoo.com

You need to learn the way of the Supermode. It's in the manual. It's a fairly long process of creating a supermode map by which you can assign up to 16 presets to to the 16 tracks of the sequencer. It's a little to involved to go into via email so my suggestion is to get a copy of the manual and read starting on page 177. If you need to you can get a copy of the manual in pdf format from http://www.emuarc.com. On 23 Oct 2001 at 8:31, Keen Sol wrote: > How do you overdub? For the CD-Rom you are going to need dos drivers from the manufacturer. I don't understand why you can't change to the C drive from your boot disk. From the A prompt all you should need to do is type in "cd c:\" without quotes and the A:\ prompt should turn into a C:\ prompt. from there you do "cd emx" no quotes again. Have only been able to find on the web DOS 6.2.2 bootdisk for download that will not recognize the C: hard drive...it seems that these bootdisks are meant for reformatting one's hard drive by booting in DOS to A: and then installing system software from a CD-ROM. Where can I download one that WILL recognize the C: or how do I change the autoexec or whatever the file is so it recognizes the hard drive (where EMX and the banks are) as well as A: and the CD-ROM drive? I have an Emax rack. I have a bunch of disks with the SE operation system on them, but I don't think that means its an Emax SE (I always thought there was 2 parts to the SE upgrade, an eeprom update, and then the new OS. Basically I have the options in the operating system for the spectrum synthesis and transform multiplication stuff, and the spectrum synthesis works, but whenever I go to do a transform multiply (even just on 2 *tiny* sounds with nothing else in memory) the Emax responds with "not enough memory" This leads me to think that my Emax does not have the eeprom upgrade. Looking around on emulatorarchive.com they have the old SE upgrade manual, which lists the contents of the upgrade pack.... containing just the ONE disk. it appears that this contained a special OS (maybe with the eeprom info in the sample area of the disk) that would upgrade the eeprom, and then turn itself into an everyday SE operating system disk.... So.... How do I upgrade my Emax to the SE EEPROM?? I doubt I can get the original disk from EMU anymore... Did anyone manage to copy the upgrade disk using emx or a disk imaging program before using it and having it modify iteslf?? Otherwise, the kludge would be to get an image of an SE EEPROM and copy it to my EEPROM... That is do-able, but i need someone with both an emax SE, and a way of reading the EEPROM..... anyone have any comments on my reasoning about the SE upgrade, or even better, a way for me to perform it on my Emax?????? thanks, julian ===== //////////// / bleeeep! / //////////// http://briefcase.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! The SE upgrade is indeed nothing but a OS upgrade that came on 1 disc, nothing more. As far as why transform multiplication keeps giving you a "not enough memory error " I can't remember what can cause that. Hopefully someone else can answer that. All I can think of is that you need to make sure you are performing the function with a disc that has the SE OS on it. On 24 Oct 2001 at 12:45, mr julian. wrote: > > I have an Emax rack. Here's a quote straight out of the PDF file for the EMAX SE update manual (from emulatorarchive.com) 8< - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To Update Your Emax: 1. Locate the Emax SE Retrofit disk. This disk contains the SE software. 2. Make sure that the write protect window is closed (Unprotected). 3. Boot up your Emax with the SE Retrofit disk. 4. The SE update will be done automatically and Emax will display: \ufffdSE Updated. Please Re-boot\ufffd. 5. Remove the SE Retrofit disk and switch off Emax. I load up a "blank" disk (just the SE OS) I sample 2 sounds in, truncate them, and go to the digital processing menu. go to transform multiply. this fails every time. and tells me I dont have enough memory... maybe I should really hack the samples down, to less than 1K each or something, but whats the point working with a sample that small? Does anyone on this list use the digital processing functions in an emax SE? maybe theres some subtlety I am missing with the process. julian ===== //////////// / bleeeep! / //////////// http://briefcase.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! That does imply that the retrofit writes something back to the diskette. All I know is that I never had an SE retrofit disk, I had a disk with a bank on it that contained the SE HD OS, I used the copy software function to copy the OS onto my HD and that was it. My emax came with a bunch of disks. 1 or 2 of them had SE OS on them already (not original disks though, just copies) Its possible that the very first time an SE disk was put into my emax, it got updated - before I had it......... in which case I have some other problem with transform multiply..... > I used the copy software function to copy the OS > onto my HD and that was it. > can you please try and do a transform multiply on your emax?? I would be very interested to know what happens. just to cloud the matter further, heres some bits from around the quote I made yesterday... 8< - - - - - - - - - - - - - - READ THIS FIRST! This Emax SE product update allows you to update one Emax to an Emax SE. It also allows you to make copies of the disks and software that will run on your Emax. Sound disks formatted on your updated Emax can be loaded into a regular Emax, however they will not boot the non-SE unit. To avoid the error message \ufffdDifferent Software Rev.\ufffd, and so that you will have backup copies of the software, you should update all your sound disks with the SE software. Your SE Update includes: SE Update Manual Emax SE Update/Development Disk Spectrum Synthesis Sound Disk Transform Multiplication TM Sound Disk 8< - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ONE MORE THING! Your Footswitch jacks may have been uncalibrated by the SE update procedure. It would be a good idea at this time to go to the recalibrate menu (located under MASTER, Special) and check to see if the footswitch polarity has changed and if so, change it back to the correct polarity for your footswitches. 8< - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, my emax definately loads the SE OS disks, so from the first quote it means I *must* have the eeprom upgrade already... shame there's no way to indicate the eeprom's version, or upgrade status in the menu system. I have had my emax rack for about 3 years now, and I really dont use it much... but I want to.... I love the way it sounds... I guess I just got frustrated with the transform multiply stuff, and the arpeggiator latching up.... (apparently it doesn't with the SE OS I'll have to try it again!!) so I gave up on getting right into it. a bit sad really. I'm making a huge effort to find out more about it now so I can get into it more and actually start using it for more than just occasional lo-fi sample hits. julian ===== //////////// / bleeeep! / //////////// http://briefcase.yahoo.com.au - Yahoo! Hi I'm new to this group and this posting caught my eye. I currently only still have my Emax II. I got rid of my original Emax ages ago but... there is a chance I might have the "Emax SE Update/Development Disk" data. Long story! I'd have to really look for it. The original upgrade did write back to the disk so you could only use it once. Emu was a little funny this way.(Especially with the memory upgrade procedure for the Emax II!!) It's been a long time since I used an Emax but the problems you're having are probably due to the fact your machine really isn't an SE. Gotta run for now, but I will be here if you want to reply. I continue to make progress, slowly, downloading emax sound banks and putting them on disks. Is there anyone willing to send me disks of a few of the banks, rather than my jumping thru hoops to deal with DOS and the emx app etc? I'm mainly interested in good brass (esp tbn and tuba), double reeds, real chimes/carillon, and a solo strings bank that isn't as "whiny" as the one on the emax site (I think it's zd724?). Thanks. Hi, Sorry to pour cold water on this idea !! We too have the SE diskette, the problem is that it can only be used to upgrade an Emax once. Once the Emax EEPROM is updated the diskette is written to and the diskette becomes the Development diskette not the Upgrade diskette. It has some nice samples on it that use TM. We havent had any luck with disk2file either.... You need to reverse engineer the small upgrade application from the OS diskette...and switch the bit back on that means its a new upgrade diskette..trouble is finding a PC or Mac program that reads and writes to ALL areas of the Emax formatted diskette. Thats why EMX is a bit tricky...Now if someone copied a virgin SE diskette with EMX we might be in business..... E-mu don't have the ability to create more SE upgrade diskettes, and they have not offically sanctioned the Emax diskettes on our web site either....they just turn a blind eye. Send me a copy of that disc and if it's a sector pointer or
non pointer we can recover it, also send a copy of the Emaxll memory upgrade
disc that goes with the 4 meg kit #2208, and the 8 meg kit #2208. Or anyone
who has these and would like to make some copy's and send them out, I will
have our team work on them. If $$ needed for shipping no problem.

I will make you sample floppy disks if we can trade. I need a copy of the operating system disks for the EMAX HD to do it first. I'm showing a Hard Disk error when booting the machine. the machine will only boot up if I have a floppy inserted. I can read my floppy disk collection but I can't sample or tweak the sounds. I've been struggling with emax I sound banks downloaded from the emuarchive site. I've finally gotten my hands on an old IBM thinkpad running Win 3.1 which has the version of DOS which the EMX app (supposedly) behaves with. I've used EMX with this equipment using new DS/DD floppies to write sound banks to disks. When I put the disks in my emax I keyboard or emax HD, most of them do not work: they contain no presets, and one keeps freezing the emax. The one or two banks that did work have a couple of presets that are dead. Is it simply a matter of writing the bank several times and hoping one of the "writes" is good? Or is there yet another PC or DOS factor I'm missing? With the HD (rev 1.1) should I be using the emax I or emax II banks? Thanks! Ben

This could be an issue with the two drives each being dirtu or out of alignment causing the discs to not read on the other. Get a floppy cleaning kit and try thoroughly cleaning both drives first. I myself have never had an issue with EMX EXCEPT that tricky formatting function which has never seemed to work even during my days on a 486sx running Win 3.x On 14 Nov 2001 at 14:30, Ben & Mana Model wrote: > I've been struggling with emax I sound banks downloaded from the emuarchive > site. I've also tried to write disks with EMX, using different setups. I've managed to copy banks up to the Z749 disk and disk no 59,60,62 and 63. On several of those I got a CRC error when trying to load them into the EMAX (1). I got around that problem in all cases by rewriting the disk and trying again (and then doing a save all on the emax immediately when the disk loaded, otherwise I always got a CRC error the second time I loaded the disk). On all banks above number 749 (except the ones mentioned above) I manage to get the disks to load, but the presets and samples are broken. Often the preset names look OK in the first and last couple of presets, but the ones in the middle don't even show the PXX. Trying to select one of the broken presets almost always reboots the EMAX. The strange thing is that on a given bank, the errors always look exactly the same. The preset names are broken in the same way, the samples sound the same regardles of what setup I used to write the disk, HD/DD, "pure" DOS or win98 in dos mode etc. So I wonder if it isn't the disks that are incorrectly copied in to .emx format in the first place. I'd like to know if anyone has been able to make a (working) copy of the ZD778 FM Synth #1 bank or any other bank that I've had no luck with. /Max ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ben & Mana Model" <manaben@...> To: <emax@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 14, 2001 11:30 PM Subject: [emax] still dealing with DOS... > I've been struggling with emax I sound banks downloaded from the emuarchive > site. Hi The EMX downloads have been tested and are okay, except for perhaps one. If anyone would like all the EMX files on a CD rather than having to download them from our web site , please email me off list with your address, and we will send them out for free. We will get more EMX files onto the site, as we have a very large collection. We are tracking down replacement LCD's for the Emax, and they might be available for $20 - 30. More news soon. email address rob@... Regards Rob The Emulator Archive www.emulatorarchive.com

I have an emax (I) HD rack unit. I'm looking for a couple instrument samples/banks to replace the ones that came with the HD... I'd love to have a solo strings bank that isn't quote so whiny as the one that came with my emax, as well as a xylophone/marimba that isn't as clanky as the one that came with my HD. Does anyone you have either of these? Thanks! Ben www.silentclowns.com
