Hi, The Plus 1.0 OS supports external SCSI drives, like a ZIP100. The HD versions don't. Regards Rob

It would be a matter of getting yourself some 25-pin ribbon cable, some connectors and screws and making a hole in the back of the unit. Of course, only attempt this if you have a fairly good understanding of working on electronic gear, though it is mostly a mechanical effort. In other words, mechanical activity has a tendency to leave things like metal shavings and such, and that would be bad to get into your electronics. > -----Original Message----- > From: Niklas Olsson [mailto:niklas627@...] > Sent: 26 September 2001 09:12 > > Hi all! > > I was thinking what is the difference between Emax Plus 1.0 and Emax > SE HD 1.1? The software version is independent of the hardware version. Any machine can run the latest software. The SE moniker is a software only feature (i.e. it runs on any hardware) that means 'Synthesis Enhanced' and adds some some wacky ways to create new waveforms. Spectrum Interpolation is like an Additive Synthesis system combined with some time based parametric shaping control, and Transform Multiplication is a way to combine (convolve) two waveforms together to make a new sound. Kind of like a weird form of morphing two sounds. I think there may be some other features, or at least bug fixes in 1.1, but I can't remember of the top of my head. It's probably better than 1.0 ;-) Scott

Hi, Yep - if you have an Emax with an internal hard drive, you can hook up a SCSI external drive with a DB25 external to DB50 internal SCSI adapter plus a 50pin internal SCSI cable for 2 devices. We will be offering a kit soon. However you can't select the SCSI ID of the external drive unless you have the Plus OS. Which means you can't format or access the external drive. The HD OS versions only cope with one SCSI drive. Upgrade details and some cool manuals are on our web site at this address: http://www.emulatorarchive.com/Samplers/EmaxOverview/EmaxSCSI/emaxscsi.html We also have the Plus OS for download. Hello I try to upgrade my Emax HD to SE or Plus but without any luck. EMX works fine for making sample disks, but OS transfer dosn't work. I'll try different computers with old 720k drive and 486 processors. Every time when I put a new OS disk , Emax just hangs. Maybe Emax SE upgrade contain Eprom upgrade??? Any help?? Nope, it's not Eprom. It's a very common problem with EMX. Your only real chance at getting EMX to write the OS to disk is to use a system running DOS 6 or earlier with a 720k drive. Hi, John is right EMX is a tricky program to get going, however even if you get an OS diskette created properly there are a couple of things to bear in mind. The SE versions of the Emax OS require an EEPROM update, which was provided on the diskette from E-mu. The EMX download version does not have this, so the SE software will only work on an SE Emax. The update was because E-mu Systems wanted to charge for the upgrade and copy protect it. They have since "lost" the upgrade masters... The only way you can upgrade to SE is to copy the EEPROM of a SE Emax. The Plus and HD versions of the OS rely on additional PAL logic to drive the SCSI addressing, therefore these OS versions are unlikely to work in an old Emax. Whether these means a failure to boot or just the SCSI options don't work we don't know. All 3 of our Emaxs are SE. To check whether the EMX process is working, make an Emax OS 3.2 diskette and see if your Emax boots up with it. If it does you know the EMX process works. If it doesn't you know that the EMX process doesn't work yet, so make sure you run EMX under a DOS boot, that you use brand new 720k DS/DD diskettes that have previously been formatted on the Emax. We have EMX working with 1.44MB floppy drives. Hope this helps !! Rob

Hello I'd like to now how much sound difference beetwin EMAX and Emulator II.I've heard very nice tracks with Emulator II and just wondering if EMAX can be sound close to it.Basically sound routines and design in EMAX are similar to Emulator II(except large scale IC's insted standart chips) but anyway it should be differences. If anybody compared side by side EMAX and Emulator II? Thanks.

Hi, The Emax was designed as a low cost emulatuion of the Emulator II, and it has a very similar spec (8 voices, same basic sample rate, same memory size, analog filters). However the Emax is NOT an exact duplication and there are differences in the sample replay engine (custom E chip rather than TTL). The Emulator II does seem to sound more classy and it has a certain prescence. The sample libraries have some differences too, the GOLD series Emax sample diskettes are worth hunting out. There are some very good EII and Emax sounds on CDROM. The Emax is easier to find with a hard disk, and can even cope with a ZIP drive if you get the right model. It is a bit more flexible too in terms of digital sound processing. Both models can use a computer sample editor sucgh as Sound Designer I and II pre 2.8. We will be loading up some recordings of every Emulator/Emax soon, so you can listen to the differences. We suggest buying both !!! Regards Rob The Emulator Archive www.emulatorarchive.com

Are the sample CD-Roms you were selling actual E-mu CD-Roms or are you duplicating
them yourself? I have the Emax II Elements of Sound Volume 1 CD-Rom which is
basically the Emax library ported over to Emax II. It's 99 1Mb banks. I know there is a
way to make images of these CD-Roms. Just wondering. Perhaps you'd like to trade, I'd
like to get some 4Mb banks.

Hi John, Everything we sell in the online store is the original product straight from the manufacturer - in the Emax II case from QUpArts. We are also collecting sample CDROM's for all E-mu samplers and we do trade privately with CD-R copies on a 1:1 basis. We obviously don't sell CD-R copies as its not fair to the sample creators. Sample CDROM's are dead easy to copy with a CD writer. We are looking for: Elements of Sound Volume 3 and 4 (we do have these but they are stuck at E-mu HO....) We have E-mu Elements of Sound Volume 1 and 2 Northstar Max 1, 2, 3 OMI Universe of Sounds - All Volumes Greytsounds Best of Plus a range of E-mu samples from the USA lead demonstrator employee on ZIP/SyQuest Sample CDROM's have sold alot less than we had hoped, people buy an Emax II for ?200 - 300 and don't fancy shelling out for a CDROM at ?50 - 75, even though there are some awesome sounds on the sample disks. We will get more of these sample libraries up as demos, and maybe as downloads once the copyright is history. We would love to get hold of the 4 and 8 MB banks!! Let me know if any of our sample CDROM's are of interest. Regards Rob

I guess I'm like most people. I don't even have a CD-Rom drive for my Emax II. I have so many banks on Syquest cartridges that I can't imagine shelling out more money for a CD-Rom drive and CD-Roms. Bad moderator, I didn't even realize this thread was going to the whole list. I thought I had written Rob directly, My apologies. http://www.emuarc.com is Rob's excellent Emulator website where they use to offer Emax II CD-Roms. It would appear they are all out of stock now though.

No! Don't do it!! Please don't subject us to Flash and Dreamweaver's broken html!! I don't know what the alternative OS following is on this list, but I use BSD and Linux as well as Windows, and Konqueror and Mozilla don't render Dreamweaver stuff very well. And before the Microsofties say anything, yes it is Dreamweaver's fault. Too late :( I've already updated my home page. However I haven't changed any of the Emax pages yet and I'm not sure I want to go through the effort anyway. I primarily changed the buttons. I like buttons that react not just static images. I'm certainly not going to get into a discussion of where the fault lies after all I'd imagine most people on this list are using Macs anyway :) On 22 Oct 2001 at 13:59, Gordon JC Pearce wrote: > No!
