Anyone got an Emax I SE HD or HD for sale? I won one on Ebay, but was just informed it broke during shipment and I am getting a refund. I was aware the Emax I sounded better than the Emax II, so I am looking for that. -Dan

I have a friend who will be putting up an HD (upgraded to SE, but no panel graphics for SE functions) on ebay in a week or two. Might be too long for you to wait, but it's coming.

that would be fine. I don't need one right away, per se. Let the list know the URL when he does post it on Ebay. Much thanks, Dan

Regarding Dan's message saying the original Emax sounds better than the Emax II................I've never heard that. Is that true? At lower resolution ( is it 12 bit ? ) it must have a much lower signal to noise ratio.................did it have warmer filters? I don't get it. I had them in my studio next to each other. The problem is that most of my sound disks were for the original emax. The emax2 was loading and converting them fine but the settings were slightly off (oftern the sound was duller with the version 2). Also, some of the sounds needed the extra crunch of the 8 bid system. Overall, the sounds were very similar. I can see people prefering one over the other. After all, the emax2 comes standard with SCSI and more Ram. However, I decided to let the emax2 go and keep the original one. Not sure if this was smart since mine is non scsi, only SE. However, the loading time of 20 seconds per disk is ok for me. What I found is that the overall sound is nice with the emax1. It looks like the stereo sampling and chorus takes away the stereo panning WOW effect of the original emax. So, what sounds better or not is probably a matter of taste. The digital filter in the emax2 was pretty good, even with resonance. For most of the sample sounds the filter is open anyway. However, I must have thought that the emax1 is better sounding, otherwise this one would have been gone. Cord --- In emax@yahoogroups.com, JUDITH DEHART <deharts@p...> wrote:

"Sounds better" is a very relative term. It has been mentioned that the filters on the Emax
definitely are warmer being that they are true analog filters (SSM?). I had a few of the
analog samples I originally made on my Emax SE HD not sound even remotely the same
when I imported them into my Emax II because the filter just didn't work the same. But
we are talking 10 samples out of hundreds.
I think the Emax II's increased clarity is far better for realistic sound samples, and it's nice
to be able to sample in stereo. I also like the crispness it adds to hi-hats and feel it's
better at reproducing vocal samples as well. ln the end though it is going to depend on
what you want to sample and need from your sampler. I personally found the loss of the
true analog filter to be worth the increase in outputs, better SCSI, and most of all
additional memory. That is because for me the instrument needed to be a workhorse for
live shows.
In the end though most people say the Prophet 2000/2002 samplers sound better than
even the Emax did.
Technically the Emax is 12 bit companded into 8 bits of memory.

I'm not sure judging an Emax II based on coverted Emax I floppies is a good compairison. They should probably be compaired using the disks disigned for each.
