Anyone have reliable copies of Sound Designer EMAX or Alchemy 3.0??

Anyone have reliable copies of Sound Designer EMAX or Alchemy 3.0??

2016-04-10 by dos.putin@...

I've been pulling my hair out. A few days ago my Macintosh Classic bit the dust ( Capacitor death)
previous to it dying, I had been using it with my EMAX II to do all the wonderful editing etc. I have the Mac to Emax II RS422 cable (obviously)

So, after my Mac Classic stopped working,
I went out and found a Macintosh Powerbook 5300cs. It was running OS 8.1 when I got it, I downloaded Sound Designer 1.5 from the files section, but it will NOT connect with the EMAX no matter what I try. I even downgraded to OS 7.5. No go.

I then tried to install the Alchemy 3.0 that is hosted here. When un-stuff'd it shows a program titled "Alchemy™ 3.0 [k]" I try to run this, and it freezes the system just after the menu bar comes up and the outline of the toolbar window. It won't run.

Maybe it's my system? Or maybe it's these distributions of files, that are bogus?

Anyone got any solid advice on this matter? I would really like to have my old work flow back. Mac and EMAX II are so well suited for each other.

Thanks

-DOS

Does it freeze even when the cable is unplugged?
I found a wire had come loose in my cable end and was causing this kind of behavior.
Also- not all ports on all Mac systems work due to apple cheaping out on hardware for the geoport.
If the powerbook has 2 ports, try the other port…

Just a couple of thoughts.

I have a 5300c that I have had same problem with. They have a single (combined) geo-port and there were problems with the port manager that were supposedly corrected with os 8.6. One person on another forum said he got his 5300c to work with sound designer and os9?, however I hadn't got it to work on mine yet

Thanks for the reply!
I suspected something was up. I had heard from a few other mumbles on older forum posts that it's a problem with the clock speed of the Serial.
I just wanted to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak. I guess I will have to look for an older non "PowerPC" powerbook.

Anyone wanna buy a nice Powerbook 5300 with both OS 7.5.3 and OS 8.1 installed?! It's got Netscape too! LOL.

A interesting note about the 5300series, I was able to install a 20 gig hard drive and format to very near full capacity, (almost unheard of in the 1995 vintage era) would make for good sample storage if one could get seral to work or was able to load from SCSI and find a way to edit

The machine that I have has a SCSI port on the back. And it has an accessory that breaks that connector out to a standard DB-25. There are many videos of users of these era powerbooks installing solid state IDE drives, and formatting them (large sizes such as 20gig are not uncommon)

Indeed it would make a good sample storage machine, if there was a way to get any software to load and communicate with the EMAX II. All the versions of Alchemy i have downloaded, seem to be corrupt or incomplete. As described in my previous post, the software causes the system to critically hang, before loading, requiring a reboot.

Anyone out there have a working copy of Alchemy 3.0?

I assemble these cables, and the one that I am using is freshly assembled to my extreme level of quality control. It's not a cable issue. The Alchemy software causes a system freeze that is unrelated to the cable. The GUI of the program won't even load. Like I said, it draws the menu bar, and start to draw the tool bar, and then FREEZE! Dang.

I don’t think it’s the Alchemy post. It’s been there for quite some time without complaint.

It could how you downloaded and copied to the machine.
I know I had trouble the first times I took software from the net for my old macs.

What do you mean "OS 8.6 and under?"

I've been running OS's up to 8.1 on the Powerbook 5300.
I have 8.6, and will try installing it to see if it remedies my issues. I will report back.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
