Main output distorting

2014-04-28 by Krikor

Hi
I haven't used my emax for a few month.
Today when I plugged it in the main out sounds like 8bit going thru a fuzz.
All 8 voices acting the same.
Anybody has an idea what can cause that?
Best
K

Krikor-

Did you ever try that other PLUS OS version Dave supplied to see if the transfer with EmuSer worked for you?

Thx,

Hi Ted,
I did today, it didn't work. I still get wrong answer from the emax (0.0.0.0 instead of the right sysex message)
I need to try this fix:
http://eiiiforum.com/index.php?topic=2274.15
I will do that when I have some time after the 15 may.
I found a another emax in Paris, if it works I will buy it.
Mine is 1020 serial 335, the one I found is 1020 serial 330.
So it should be compatible with HD mod too.

Re: [emax] Main output distorting

That description of connecting the pins directly from one chip to the other chip makes me think it is the cable used.
Perhaps the cable is too long, or doesn't have proper shielding, or not enough twist in wire so that signal loss or interference occurs in the length of the cable.... just a couple thoughts electrically.

The only other thing I can think of would be a difference in ground potential between the two connected devices. The voltage difference can mess with the signal too... I know on RS-422 devices I used to install for Point of Sale, that in rare installations we had to use line conditioners with "ground guard" that negated difference potential across the grounds. Once we did that the RS-422 worked perfectly. But those were expensive.... although there is testing that can be done to see if there is a voltage on the ground that shouldn't be there... usually this is AC voltage present.

On that note, AC that has a bad EMI / RF filter from some device in the studio could also put that AC onto the ground and the other devices could pick it up.... I have seen that in practice at a site also.

I dunno- but you could certainly check for AC on the DC lines, just set your multimeter to AC and check between +5 and GND and then also check +12V and GND.
You shouldn't have AC there.

Re: [emax] Main output distorting

Hi,
So i changed the IC16, it didn't change a thing regarding the RS422
transfert.
I still get the error message.
If i try to send something to the emax i get a bad ACK, bad packet message.
If try to retrieve a bank I get the message in the PNG attached from EMXP,
and the emax keeps trying to send the back.
Otherwise on the distortion problem, it is gone.
i reseated all the DACs and it's irking fine.
The weird thing is that i always had a voice that was saturating, so i
bought 4 spare DACs.
i tried to change the "defective" chip, but then i got some crazy bug,
sound was distorted with some kind of a ground loop in the back.
I put the original one in place, and now it's all working.
I guess the emxp/rs422 is not an option for me
:(

Re: [emax] Main output distorting

2014-04-30 by Ted Summers

You replaced the old chip and the distortion goes away- this would mean to me that there was a bad connection on a pin of the IC.
regards the RS422- I don't have a EmuSer, so I don't have any other idea than previously explained as possible reasons.

Re: [emax] Main output distorting

2014-04-30 by Krikor

Yes I reseated all the DACs and it was gone! And I guess the DAC I bought might not be good, or maybe their pins not being the same are making a bed connection too.
Regarding the rs422, I tested my cable, I used some good quality shielded cable to make it. I also tested the rs422 on the emax. No problem there.
Tomorrow I'll test the midi transfer to see kid it works.
Best
