i agree with ted

i recently had the same problem with a emax2 the customer sent a hd disk with os on

but i did not realise and kept just getting errors

i used a dsdd disk and it worked correctly

the on board floppy controller uses a dsdd signal this is a weaker signal than for the hd types as they both use different magnetic tape

the metal oxide type tape in hd disks needs a bigger magnetic field to write to the disk

and why there is the extra hole in the floppy disk a pin contact falls into that hole telling the onboard controller that it is a hd disk and requires the stronger field

the problem is the floppy controllers on the emax are only dsdd types so dont even know about the hd function does not have the signal connected to its controller

so when you cover the hole your making the hd look like a dsdd and it will work but with mixed results from crc errors to botched os where bits are wrong and it crashes the machine to loosing data over time in a short period invest in some proper dsdd they are about £1 each and you can still get new ones

The magnetic strength of HD disks is different.

It can cause problems, especially where you are using the original stock floppy….

this more sounds like you either have a corrupt OS image, or a problem with the floppy drive being able to write that particular section of the disk (head issues).

Could it be because they are HD disks with just tape covering the hole? Find it weird though that everything else works but this one feature.
