Spider3Print 3.5b9 & Target Printing HPB9180

Spider3Print 3.5b9 & Target Printing HPB9180

2008-11-28 by shreymel

Hi

Has anyone come across this:

I am using an Intel iMac with 10.5.5, an HP B9180 (with latest drivers).

I printed a 225 Target from Spider3Print using all the settings I have used before - no
colour management etc and created a new print pre-set in the print dialogue. Target
printed, I let it dry and then I created the profile. This is the first time I have used
Spider3Print 3.5. I am a long time user of PrintFixPro, so I know what I am doing.

The profile came out bad! Soft proofed in Photoshop and even printed a photo - it was
bad. I had an old target printed from v3 on the same paper. It looked different to the one
printed with 3.5. The yellows looked almost sickly yellow/green. I had 3 installed as well,
so I printed another target from that. Same problem of sickly yellow. I don't what has
changed on my system, because I have profiled paper on my system with 10.5 and
everything has been fine. At least I am pretty sure I have. So it could be a problem
between Spider3Print and 10.5 and the HP drivers.

I did read the older target in and that profiled fine. I was thinking it may be the Spider or
the software. This rules that out.

I then printed the targets from photoshop with no colour adjustment etc. The targets
looked as they should - comparing them to the older target. The yellows were yellow(!). So
that tells me, the HP drivers are fine. I'm still printing with the older profiles - so my
printer drivers should be fine. I have also printed via lightroom and colours match
photoshop.

My conclusion to all this, is that there is a problem between Spider3Print and 10.5. As far
as I know, I have ruled out all other variables. And I now has a workaround - print the
targets in Photoshop.

If anyone can shed any light on why I cannot print correctly using Spider3Print, it would
be a great help.

Thanks in advance.

So you've done a nozzle check?

Yep.

Recalibrated, cleaned the printhead, everything.

Doesn't explain why it prints perfectly from the older profiles and photoshop prints the
targets properly.

We have seen some similar problems recently in the Mac printing chain. We've finally solved one with the Canon graphic printers that now allows users to print targets directly from any application (including ours) again, without it causing incorrect color (this involves a rather unexpected install process to get the Canon drivers to be fully functional). This sounds quite similar: older OS version worked, user already knows what settings to use, works from Photoshop-printed targets, but not Spyder3Print-printed targets. I'll see if Dave Miller (who has our HP B9180) can add any info, but he's pretty busy at the moment.

Re: [colorvision_group] Spyder3Print 4 & Target Printing HPB9180 & Snow Leopard

Back to this old chestnut!

I, unfortunately, still cannot print a proper target from Spyder3Print, now at v4.

I can print the target via Photoshop CS4, which I can then profile and everything works well, but it would be nice to able to print from Spyder3Print.

I have set Application Manager Color in the driver, what about the Color Matching setting? ColorSync or Vendor? Via Photoshop, there is no choice, but in Spyder3Print I can select either, but is defaulted to ColorSync with the paper profile selected, rather than automatic.

I hope that sheds some light on this.

This is how you need to do it (and this applies to all Canon printer
drivers running under Snow Leopard):

First: Make sure you have the latest driver installed. Go to Print &
Fax,
select your current Canon driver, and click on Options and Supplies...
to see what version it is. (It should be 10.26.0.0, and here's the Apple
list of latest drivers for all printers):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

If you don't have 10.26.0.0, then click "-" to remove the older Canon
driver from the list. Then, with the printer attached and powered on,
click "+", and add back the driver for it (this should download and
install the latest version for you).

- Now: when you PRINT and want to turn off color management in
Spyder3Print, THIS is the way to do it:

- In the Color Matching pane of the driver, select ColorSync (not
Canon Color Matching!)

- In the popup beneath that, you'll see "Automatic"; a list of all
the Canon standard profiles; and a command to choose from other
profiles.
Use that last command to see a list of all profiles on your system.

- Select "Generic RGB" from the list. (this is the key). Then say OK and
you'll see that "Generic RGB" shows beneath the ColorSync radio button
in the Color Matching pane. This is the secret to disabling color
management with the Canon drivers in Snow Leopard. (This may also work
with Leopard; and it should also work with all other updated printer
drivers from all manufacturers).

- Select the paper type, output quality, resolution, etc. as usual and
print the target sheet. (Just leave the Color Options pane alone)

- NOW you should get a properly dark target print. Measure this and

build a profile.

You would need to select vendor...

Thanks for your help.

With your help (and a bit of paper and ink!) and figured out what settings are needed.

In Color Matching, you need to select ColorSync and from the pulldown select sRGB (HP drivers don't have Generic RGB listed), as David Miller suggested. You then need to go back to Paper/Quality make sure that the settings are correct for the paper there. As when changing the Color Matching settings changes the Paper/Quality settings!

I hope this helps other people as well.

Thanks again.

This workaround typically requires you choose the same profile
elsewhere in the ColorSync settings. In theory the correct choice is
GenericRGB for Leopard, and sRGB for SnowLeopard, but the two are
sufficiently similar that you might not see the difference.
