EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

2008-10-28 by Rollin

I just received an EIZO CG222W monitor to replace a CRT that died on
my system. The documentation with it indicated that I needed
to "unistall any measurement driver that may be installed on the PC"
before installing the EIZO ColorNavigator. Just what does this mean?

I have a dual monitor setup which includes the new EIZO and a Dell
LCD monitor as the second monitor. I have the Spyder3 package
installed and used it in the past to calibrate both the CRT and the
Dell LCD )as much as it can be profiled). I crearted profiles for
each and used the MS Color Management Applet (WinColor) to load the
different profiles for each. I have a dual headed NVidia FX3400
graphics card.

With the new setup:

1. Do I keep the Spyder3 code installed?
2. Can I use it to profile the Dell LCD but let the EIZO
ColorNavigator handle the EIZO monitor?
3. Should I remove the MS applet - it now appears totally confused as
to what is actually installed as far as monitors?
4. Any other things I need to know about this environment?

I like the new monitor and I like the Spyder3 packages. I would like
to make sure I am using them together in the correct manner.

Thanks,
Rollin

I'd suggest using the Eizo software once, with your Spyder, to set
your desired gamma and whitepoint internally in the display. Then you
can run the Spyder software on both displays from then on, as you
previously did.

Re: EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

At the risk of sounding totally (not just partially) dumb, exactly
how does one go about setting the EIZO disply manually while using
the Spyder3 to build a profile? I have run the EIZO ColorNavigator
to set the desired gamma (2.2) and whitepoint (6500K) but the monitor
looks to be on the cool side (slightly). I have opened some images
of prints that I made and have looked at them under a color corrected
light source vs. the image on the montior (using the paper profiles
from Spyder3Print) and the prints are slightly warmer.

I am guessing the I would have to open the EIZO ColorNavigator and
use the Manaual Adjustment option which will let me set the
brightness, black level, gamma and 6 colors (RGBCMY) while also
running the Spyder3 Elite software to create a profile. I would
think the EIZO software will be making a hardware adjustment away
from the basic 2.2/6500 setup and the Spyder software will be trying
to build a profile that gets loaded to the video card to also make
adjustments.

Before I start playing around, I thought I would ask if anyone has an
EIZO (mine is the CG222W) and has done this type of adjustments?
Also, if you have, what controls did you identify to the Spyder
software for the monitor?

Thanks,
Rollin

Run ColorNavigator, choose your appropriate gamma and whitepoint, with
the Spyder. Then, once those have been set in the internal board as
"custom" leave it at custom and use the Spyder with the Datacolor
software to build your display profiles there after if you prefer;
that's what I do, and of works very well.

Re: EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

2008-11-25 by Rollin

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you mean or am not doing it
correctly as my monitor still has a definite blue cast. Here is what
I have done:

1. Run the EIZO ColorNavigator to set the monitor to 6500K, 2.2 gamma
brightness = 80cd/m2. Once it has run, I save to result and then
exit.

2. I run Spyder3Elite for 6500K, 2.2 gamma. When it takes the
initial measurements, it shows that the color is 6877K with a gamma
of 2.2 and brightness of 77.8 cd/m2.

3. I tried the tools->colorimeter under Spyder3Elite and it showed
the color temp as 6876K.

This is the point at which confusion sets in. I need to get the
monitor set at 6500K. Basically as far as I can tell, I would have
to use the Eizo ColorNavigator to make changes to R,G,B values if I
wanted to try to use the Spyder utility to build a profile for the
video card.

I am running under Win XP and have disabled WinColor (the color
control applet). I have dual monitors off one video card. I do know
that I am setting/measuring the correct monitor under both software
tools.

I know I must be missing something or doing something wrong. Any
help would be appreciated.

Re: EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

I have added my reponses to your questions in the appended text
below. I asked Eizo support and their reply was that I would have to
unistall both Colornavigator and Sypder3 software, reinstall only the
ColorNavigator and use it. They claim that having the Syder3
software installed is causing a problem. They are also suggesting
that I may have to only have one monitor installed while setting the
Eizo monitor. I will try this and post my results. Worst case, I
guess, is I have to buy and additional graphics card and run one
monitor per card.

I must say this is turning into a real hassle. When I had a CRT and
a cheap LCD, I did fine with the Spyder package. Now that the CRT is
gone and I replaced it with a very good LCD capable of color managed
work, things have definitely gotten complicated. Oh well, it keeps
me from getting bored.

Response: Yes. My desktop displays a photograph which has a netral
gray border around it. The photo looks cool and the gray is
definitely on the blue side.

Response: This would require that I change RGB settings to achieve a
profile. The problem is that I would need to use the ColorNavigator
software to make the changes. I wonder if I can have it and the
Sypder3 sofware running at the same time and if any changes in the
Nav would be reflected immediatly to the monitor LUT.

Re: EIZO ColorNavigator and Spyder3 Setup

2008-12-04 by Rollin

A followup to my previous posts. Basically what the Eizo support
people are telling me is that I have to uninstall both the Spyder3Elite
and the Eizo software and then reinstall the Eizo ColorNavigator but
not the Spyder3 package. The reasoning is that there is a conflict
between the device drivers for the Spyder3 Colorimeter.

I have done it and, to the naked eye, I think the Eizo monitor is now
OK or at least better. Of course, I have nothing to check with other
than their software which says the monitor is calibrated. I will need
to do some soft proofing/printing to see if this is true.

Without the Spyder3 package installed, I cannot now generate a profile
for the second monitor which is not an Eizo but that is minor as I use
it to park my Photoshop tool pallets, etc. and not the image I am
working on. Besides, it is a basic LCD with limited options for color
management.

That is what Eizo would tell you, but not your only option. I run both
packages with no conflicts, and calibrate both displays. Besides, once
you have set the Eizo's internal custom gamma and whitepoint once, you
don't need Color Navigator loaded any longer, and can control both
displays with the Spyder software if you need both displays calibrated.
