I've just received the 3800 and the Epson profiles are very good
indeed.I upgraded from the R2400 and with that one I used my custom
profiles made with PrintFix Pro.I do not think I'll need custom
profiles for the 3800 (using Epson papers,of course),I'll make 'em
with PrintFix for different papers (Ilford,Moab,etc.). The results
compared to the 2400 are a little better, but, yes,it may be the new
owner complex :-)

They both profile very well. Choose on whether you need roll feed and heavy quantity use (4800) or smaller footprint, lower price, and sheetfeed only, plus ability to change easily from matte to gloss printing (3800).

Don't believe it for a minute; build a custom profile for your Epson paper, and compare PDI prints... you'll choose the PrintFIX PRO profile (or some tweak of it, if your tastes vary) over the canned profile, everyone I speak to who has tried it agrees...

Of course I'll try.Anyway the Epson profiles for the 3800 are
really much better than the ones for the 2400.
Thank you for the attention

Thanks for all the input on my original question. I would like to
comment on profiling an Epson 1280 with MIS GP inks. It worked so
good that I could print B&W using all ink colors. This was prior to
PFP 2 and then both my 1280s went down and I have decided to move up
to the pro line of printers so I haven't been able to see what the
exteded grays would have done on these printers and probably won't as
I will be selling the two 1280s for parts or for some one else to
fix. Another question is how do the profiles created with PFP2
compare to the results obtained with the Imageprint Rip that are sold
with the Epson Pro printers?

I haven't been keeping up on what is offered as bundles with the various Epsons, but I certainly wasn't aware of Imageprint bundles, last I looked it was ColorBurst (but this may vary country to country as well). At any rate, RIPs are less and less necessary for OEM ink printing as the printers become more linear. The comparisons I've seen between B&W RIP output with OEM inks, and B&W PrintFIX PRO 2 output with OEM inks has shown both to be quite acceptable, with the added advantages of flexibility, control, and easy preview going to PFP2. By the way, best RIP results still require PFP or some other patch reading tool for linearization of the RIP.
