It hadn't occurred to me that the Uninstall command for the previous version of Spyder didn't actually do the job it said it would.
I will have a word with support.

If you installed the latest version of any Spyder2 product after having a
previous version installed on the same machine under Windows, then the problem is
that the totally new driver in the latest version is having issues with
components of the older driver that were not successfully removed. If you start a
support ticket at www.colorvision.
