Make sure it's not the cable itself. Unplug the cable completely, from
both ends, and then plug it back in again firmly. (I seem to remember one
or two similar cases were the cable wasn't plugged all the way into the
back of the spectro)

Next question: if you do About This Mac, click on More Info, and select
USB: do you see a "Color Mouse III" item attached to your USB bus? (That's
the spectro).
