New panel

New panel

2009-05-17 by synthwick

I've finally got my panel process down to something I'm proud of, so I've posted a photo of a few modules I'm working on now.
I usually use the frack format, and leave each circuit to its own panel. (or maybe group a couple of LFO's or EG's)
This time a couple of the modules were too large to fit comfortably in the frac height. I laid out a double height panel, and stuck a bunch of circuits I was working on behind it. It's sort of a super control center.
I'm not sure how I feel about having grouped several modules onto one panel. It made the layout very easy, but goes against the general theme of the rest of the synth.

Here's the new panel

i think it's gorgeous but you're right.. it does kinda go against the
overall modular aesthetic. but if you're confident that those modules will
generally be used in conjunction with each other i can't see the harm.
congrats on a job well done.

Thanks a lot! yes, I will use those modules together often. I'm doing a lot of semi-random song stuff w/ my modular lately, so yeah, divider, gate seq, seq switch, out to the lag, or send a pulse to the E.G. to modulate something else according to a clock tick... Can never have enough mixers and multi's...

Ohh, I can't wait to use it! I'm about 1/3 of the way through wiring the PCB's to the panel.

I guess I should have given a little technical info about my panel process.
I design them in auto-cad. I'm using lasertran waterside decal paper (plastic). I do the method where you print in reverse, then put the toner side down on the panel and bake (melt) the lasertran onto the aluminum. Then I coat w/ a satin finish lacquer.
In person, it's really nice because you get an initial flat gray reflection off the lacquer, then as you adjust your view, you can start to see the reflections off the brushed metal behind the lacquer.

I've been trying different methods for years now, and this is what I'll stick to for now. I have even silk-screened a few panels, and this looks just as good, and I think it will hold up even better. Plus, it's 100x easier than the silkscreen process.

Fun-looking set of functions.
