Ring mod won't ring!

Ring mod won't ring!

2008-11-14 by casperelectronics

I just built the cgs/bridechamber Wave Multipliers With Real Ring
Modulator kit. I'm very happy with the module except that the ring
modulator isn't ringing, it's just mixing.
There's not a whole lot to it so I'm not sure what could be wrong.
Anyone have the same issue? Is this thing really finicky? Are there
wave forms that DON'T work together? Do I need to adjust the signals?
I put 2uF non polarized caps in series with both inputs and was able
to get some ringing from two saw waves but other signals (square and
mixed) weren't ringing.
I've been running it side by side with a "fake" ring mod based on the
AD633 Analog Multiplier IC. The AD633 can take anything and is giving
consistent ringing but it's pretty thin sounding. I'm hoping to get
similar performance from the "real" ring mod, but with a warmer sound.

obviously something isn't right. First, make sure all your diodes are facing
the correct way. It's probably some simple construction error.

How did you wire the inputs?
The 1U non-polar cap buffers the Triangle input into the Modulator In.
In my modules, I don't use the Mod In pad on the PCB. Check around
there to see if anything's funky.
Try the trimpots, too, to make sure the output levels are high enough
and the inputs are trimmed out.

Thanks Scott and Ken,
The problem was in the trim adjustments.
Is there anywhere I can read about how to properly set all four pots?
I'm still getting the littlest bit of input bleed through at the
output even with fine tuning of the null trim. Is this to be expected?
Thanks for the help!!

I never am able to trim out 100%.
There is no text on the trims, but you just trim the levels to the same
as your other modular levels, and then trim out the inputs as much as
possible.
