Re: RZ-1 memory upgrade?

2013-04-19 by Graham

Actually, the mod would be pretty much identical in hardware to my Alesis MMT8 memory expansion, which does have 2 RAM chips in it, just like the RZ. Here's the MMT8 expansion guide:

The RZ expansion would follow this almost exactly.

Cheers, Graham

As far as I know, no one else has done the RAM expansion yet, and as I don't yet have an RZ myself, I can only say it's do-able from looking at the schematics. It should be almost the same as the SK5/8 expansion though - except the RZ has 2 RAM chips, so you just duplicate them - you can download the SK memory expansion guide to get an understanding of what's involved:

Kev and I were discussing doing the sample memory expansion a few posts ago. It just so happens that the RZ also stores its pattern and song data in the sample RAM, so expanding the sample RAM will automatically expand the song and pattern storage.

The RZ does not add this extra memory to individual samples and patterns and songs - you get 16 extra RZ machines, all independent and isolated from each other. You simply switch between the 16 different RZ memories.

You have another completely empty and available RZ woth of 4 samples, 60 patterns, 20 songs to fill up. Then you go to memory 2, 3, 4, etc.... until memory 16.

This expansion doesn't use the processor, which is why it is both simple and easy to do, and also limited, as mentioned. But having said that, who would still refuse a 16x expanded RZ-1, if offered it, even with these limitations?? I wouldn't!!
