I've just tested this on my own BCF: whenever I switch it on in "MC C"
mode (at least I hope that's what you refer to by "MCU"), they indeed
move to the bottom.

Yes, it's completely normal. At least, mine does that too!

Apparently, in "MC C" mode (maybe in the other emulation modes as well
- I haven't tried) the BCF relies on the computer software to make
settings that allow you to move the faders (without them snapping
back, that is!).
I've managed to get "MC C" mode working with Sonar 7. I first told
Sonar that a Mackie Control was connected to the BCF's USB MIDI I/O
ports, but even then the faders still kept moving to the bottom! Then
I opened a project, upon which some of the faders suddenly moved up
and I could start moving them at will.

So in any case you don't have to return your BCF!
