Akai S1100 4.3 OS Version EPROM images

2016-01-28 by belzrebuth@...

Hi all,

I have os version 4.3 permanently stored to all my zip 100 disks and some of my floppies but since I got an eprom burner I'd like to prepare some OS rom chips for my S1100 in order to set and forget the whole operating system copy procedure.

There images for the S1000 in the files section of the group but no images for S1100.

If anyone could be kind enough to upload v. 4.3 rom images for the S1100 it would be great!

Thanks:)

if I remember correctly you can find them on the website of the Guy
who makes the 32 MB ram cards for the s1000 (firstprinciples. au or
something) anyway its the same Guy who makes the devilfish tb303 mods.

I did this on a s1000, its a great timesaver.

I've just done this myself, and there's one gotcha. Assuming you use 1Mb chips, the rom file has to be burned onto the upper 512kb of both chips. This is because, despite using 1Mb chips, Akai only uses the upper 512kb and the highest address line is held high.

It does also mean that you can use a 512kb eprom instead of a 1Mb - though the prices of both nowadays are pretty comparable.

Hope that helps!

for my s1000 I used 27c512 eproms pulled from junk electronics from
the flea market. you can find them on ebay too.

So for my S1100 should I go with 27c512 or 27c1010?!

I'll check my spares box but I don't think I have 512 so I could go with 1010 and just write the upper part.
I didn't quite understand if these are interchangeable so I think it's safer to use the same as the originals (they're 1010 aren't they?) and follow akai's odd method..

if you have to go out and buy them then get 27C512, if you have them lying around use 27c1010.

if you're feeling brave you could take the old ones out of your s1100 and use them.

when i have to use bigger eproms than i need, i normally just make a file with two(or more) copies using the linux 'cat' command. that way i don't need to worry about the extra data lines.

you can use them interchangably, no problem nothing will break.. i imagine that akai used the bigger chip because they were cheaper at the time, or maybe the couldn't get the 27c512 chips.

better to write the contents into both the upper and lower part of the chips. harder to mess up that way!
