Re: [Simmons Drums] looking for a simmons kit to buy

2005-01-28 by Patrice JACQUOT

Hello,
I'm drummer too & I wouldn't choose a Simmons for this proper use ...
I would rather buy a low cost acoustic kit set up with some silent mesheads...It would be much more comfortable, & much more silent ...
The Simmons pads might injure your wrist.
& I'm afraid it's the worst use of a Simmons ...
Buy a Simmons for the sound , the look , but not for replacing acoustic drums , it won't do it at all ... with no pains ...

Hope this helps.
Patrice.

hi guys,
i have no experience in edrums, just accoustic, but due to my limited
space in my flat, and the limited acceptance of my neighbours, i am
looking to buy a used simmons kit incl. controller.

i am based in the UK, if anyone here knows where to get it, would
really apprechiate any hints.

cheers
stefan

Hi Stefan!

I agree with Patrice if it's just for practicing etc. Simmons is for
COOLNESS! ;)
Check www.music-store.de that often has neat bargains and good shipping
costs...

He did! Awfully rare and expensive when they show up. I think a few dudes on
the list have original cymbals... not me though!

I personally enjoy the analogue sound best, but otherwise I agree. And doing
it behind a six-edged drum is even cooler!

2005-01-31 by Patrice JACQUOT

I do wonder why Dave Simmons never made any 'cymbals', it seems odd.

Hi Paul ,
do you really know the Simmons ?
It has been Dave's obsession for a long time ...
The 1st cymbal had been made for the SDSV (with the famous pyramid pad that you can notice on the Yes 9012 Tour), the SDS7 had some too , both were an Eprom technology (about the SDSV ; for HH & cymbals sounds of course not the analog part ..) !
& Then the SDX with the moving Zone Intelligent pads & a choke area to stop the sound... 9 Multisampled cymbals ' sounds per pad sampled 16 bits & 44khz....

It seems funny that not many people seem to be doing this now, I mean
triggering samples and stuff from their drum kits..

but paul... nearly each professional Drummer has a DDrum trigger on snare & bass Drum & is triggering some studio snares samples or whatever ...
But it's true we don't see anymore pads' forest around the kit ...the look changed...but did the reality really changed ...?
The other fact is that most of drummers are playing over loops now so they don't need triggering many sounds as we did 15 years ago where we did some sort of live loops... The all Drumkit 's role in the contemporary arrangements changed ...

By the way, I looked quickly at the Simmonssynths site , if you allow me , I think the SDSV was released as a basic 5 piece kit expandable to 6 or 7 modules,
I don't think you could buy the brain with 3 modules in it without asking a special order(even so )...
but if your information is sure I will have learnt something more on Simmons ...
anyway , hope that helps & good luck for your quest !
Patrice.

Dear all,

The new site is up.
Only got one problem with one document, the SDX user guide, I can't add the last
page and protect it (not sure why yet), so that ones not up.
I'll be adding a list of contributers to the first page, this will save any list
members from being pestered for originals of documents from un-scrupulous
people wishing to sell them.
Some of the documents aer quite big, and in the next few days, I'll be adding
sizes in brackets after each link, like this "Flyer (2Mb)"

Clicking on the red pad or simmons logo takes you back to the first page.

Anyway, suggestions and comments welcome

Paul

Patrice,

not that well I'm afraid, always loved the sound and got myself and SDS8, and an
SDS6 on its way..

I remember seeing the module, but never the actually cymbal its-self.

Hmm, SDX.....
</homer simpson mode>

but not something you see a lot of bands doing, at least not live ones.
I understand the pro in the studio does, but why shouldn't small local bands?

I agree, the whole 'concept' of a band has changed, no-one seems to play a whole
tune and record it, they all seem to do 'bits'.. I understand the need for
perfection in the studio, but what about the music?
Maybe, I'm just getting old :-)

odd, A friend of mine bought an SDS5 with just 3 modules in, so I assumed that
was the low spec...
I'll fix that, thanks.

I remember seeing the module, but never the actually cymbal its-self.
Therefore anypads would do the job just the shape was different ....
I have to look in the HD & see if I still have one photo ...

I'm not talking about studio , in studio they don't anymore I think as there's a functiun in ProTools for example called "Sound Replacer", you just take the wave form of your different snares, toms as trigging point ...etc...& you assign another sample directly that will follow dynamics...
Metal bands are using triggers to trigg noise gate sometimes ...
In fact, I'm talking about live Gigs, most of the time there are some triggers...not in jazz I presume, but metal bands have some, pop bands etc...Maybe it depends in what countries, I've seen it a lot in France, in Italy , in UK too...from the 90's to recently ...
Local bands don't necessary have the money to buy a DDrum3 (the only very reliable & professional kit specialised in acoustic triggering ), & Simmons is sadly old school for the moment... I consider roland & Yamaha not convincing ...
Or the local bands don't have an album sound that obliges the samples ...In local bands , I often bring my DDrum 3, & I will soon bring an SDSV , 3 , or 7 to add a bit of magic in all that...

> The other fact is that most of drummers are playing over loops now so they

tune and record it, they all seem to do 'bits'..

yes , this is the actual way of doing things...it might change again ...I think It's coming from the Drumloops use which is creating a certain sound on the whole track...

I understand the need for
perfection in the studio, but what about the music?
Maybe, I'm just getting old :-)

I think it's just a matter of the way it sounds...
fashion !!!
It must be for the same reason that SImmons went "on the Edge" & that we all want one now ...

I might be wrong too , but it seems exceptionnal..maybe following the country needs again ...
I know there has been some special hardware for US for example...
I'll fix that, thanks.
You're welcome !
bye. Patrice.

Yes, I've played with that.

Its not something I've noticed.

Yeah, I think the simmons 'sound' is coming back :-)

Yes, I hope again to see 'bands' that can actually 'play', sometime soon.

Good point.

Like I say, I think the sound is coming back.. Slowly.

He did buy a 7 module SDSV at the same time, perahps the previous owner
wanted a 10 piece kit?

Hehe..

Next thing to do is make a list of people who've contributed and get that
up.
