MTM program change on SDS7

MTM program change on SDS7

2018-02-02 by Hans

Hi

Am I correct to understand MTM can do program change (PC) on SDS 7?

If so, have anyone tested PC on the same note?

What I’m curious about are how gracious are SDS 7 handling PC while its playing?

If a sound has a long decay and there is a program change and no new trigger, will SDS7 hold the envelope open given the new preset has also has a long decay?

If so effects like chromatic steps or noise volume change should then be possible. Anyone tested this?

My test with gate voltage to hold the envelope open rather than trigger has proven to be a little unpredictable so far. But I don’t have the possibility to do  fast program changes yet so I’m wondering if this is worth pursuing?

Yes, MTM can change Kit # values on SDS7. But, you'll need to make/find a 10pin - 10pin cable to run from MTM to SDS7. I'll try and hook up an SDS7 this weekend to make a video so you can see and hear how changing Kit # values while playing affects the sound.

Also, if anyone is interested in MTM to SDS7 cables, hit me up. If there is sufficient interest I'd be happy to make some.

Thanks Cristiano

I hope all is well with Wolfgang. I’ve been trying to come in contact with him through his contact mail  info@sim..  in regards of another matter without any luck. He is linking to this group so I would imagen he still is a member here?

Anyway, hope all is well with him, his blog hasn’t been updated since January last year.

Ed.... are you sending a Pgm Ch to the MTM to change the pgm on the SDS7 connected to it via the MTM/SDS7 link cable ?

Cheers

Just using the Selector Pad. I still have to make MTM>SDS7 cables which are gonna expensive - connectors alone are over $15 each. Hit me up if you're interested. It'd be nice to make enough of them to get price breaks to keep the cost down.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Ed.

Program change seems to be 'instant' which with some trickery might let us simulate how the run generator in SDS 1 operate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EokXz8mAVyU

My initial quest where to alter sound parameters on the note decay in a sequencer setup. The track is a little too busy for me to actually hear if the envelope close at program change? Where you able to hear this? I don't expect it to close tho.

Anyway, I had my thinking cap on since I posted my question. I had this number 7.3ms in my head, which seems reasonable fast to output sound parameters. But when calculating this the way SDS7 actually update sound parameters we have to multiply by 12 independed of actual numbers of drum modules. Meaning a single parameter like Voice Pitch on a dedicated module are updated every 88ms.

Still this should be fast enough to play 'musically' notes chromatically with a single drum module with this program change trick. Where a series of identical drum kit are stored and only Pitch (or whatever other parameter one might like to use as effect) are changed.

Regarding connectors, we might get the numbers of up if this actually can be used musically interesting. If so I plan to make a 5$ worth in parts MIDI to program change converter which relatively easily can be made to do simple 5V triggers. Then this idea might be interesting for non MTM owners who also use their SDS7 in a sequencer setup.

$15 seems exaggerated for the connector thought. Is this a NOS Simmons part or from an electronic supplier? I remember I once looked for what I thought was a rare multi-pin connector and found them dirt cheap at some eastern sellers.
