Yeah - go Dave!

I'm glad the mesh plans went into production.

But...

What am I missing here? Are the cheap SD-series from the 2000's kept
under the Simmons name? I feel really confused.

Re: [Simmons Drums] Dave Simmons is back

Really want to like this even though I’m not into buying a digital sample player ever again.

Anyone know if Dave’s role are more than marketing consultant? The way he is instructed to talk in that video I get the feeling it’s not much else.

To me that video fail. First shoving off fat analog legacy products and then introduce what seems to be a sample player with descriptions of some fancy attack parameters. If it has a virtual or analog sound engine they probably had told us very early on in the video and played some interesting new percussive sounds.

Agree with you Jesper, the product naming will not do much to help Simmons I’m afraid. Both the SD and 2000 naming have negative association to them.

I'm disappointed in this first offering from the new Simmons featuring Dave Simmons. I've been assured by others on the many threads on Facebook that this is just the beginning and future products will be better. But, I just don't see it. If your first product is an unimaginative cobbling together of current 2Box, Roland and Alesis brains with pads that don't capitalize on the iconic Simmons design and look more like what you'd get with a video game, I just don't have faith in the leadership of the company. And, when you throw in the poorly done website (pic of SDSV in the SDX blurb, most of Quiz being wrong, ham-handed tying in of two completely distinct companies as one seamless history, etc.), and the terrible sounds in the demo video, all I see is another average electronic company swimming comfortably with the pack. Don't get me wrong - I would love nothing more than to see Dave on top of the electronic drum market again making revolutionary products. But, this bumbling start does not give me hope.

Lastly, the SDSV patch from the demo is unforgivable. If you told me this was a patch called 'Vintage Hex' from a Roland kit from the '90's I would not be surprised. But, to come from the kit hailed as 'Dave's Triumphant Return' is just sad. If there was ONE patch they HAD to get right it was the SDSV patch. Make a machine that'll do an outstanding SDSV emulation and you'll gain the respect of us old-timers as well as the kids. But, based on the demo, this just doesn't do it. Again, I would love to have faith in this new incarnation but I'm having a tough time seeing past all the missteps.

Fire away!

Very disappointed with what we can see in the video. I hope Dave offers more interesting things in the future. Sounds are uninteresting, the shape of the pads is unattractive...
And...... Only L /R outputs. Really?. For me this is one of the most important features of any electronic module, INDEPENDENT CHANNEL OUTPUTS, PLEASE.
Anyway, I hope this is only a bad beginning that will improve over time.

I fully understand your point mate.
I think the target isn t us at all . yet.
They wanted a midrange kit to start for whatever reason. I guess they targeted a special market.
Guitar Center will be a dark shadow overcDave s head I m afraid. But it s been his choice to force them to deal with him.
It s a great opportunity for the stealers showing off legitimacy by having Dave in the project, but Dave must see further (as always) to use their market print and opportunity to release new kits again.
He perfectly knows that sd2000 isn t the kit we re all waiting for. But it seems important to do it that way. Remember last time he wanted the best edrum ever...it was the sdx and it cost him his company. So he will never start by a high market kit again.
He needs to make a popular attractive and cheap kit first. Yoi have to sell first if you want to create costly high end things later.
So no boys... We re not the target of this kit ; )
Maybe bc we re only a few dozens around the world knowing what it is. You cant make a living company with that.
However, the gc simmons quality made a jump forward with this model.
And yes Dave was in command for that project within limits imposed by the price target.
Impatient to try it.

I agree that the video stinks poor marketting, such a shame.

It should probably be another total new series than the "sd" connoted brand using Dave's input.
GC must show their new motivations . if there are any ^^.
For pro guys they have this dishonnest connotation it can t be deleted by only having Dave as a guest.

Re: Re : Re: [Simmons Dr ums] Dave Simmons is back

Agree with the conclusion SD2000 wasn’t for us. So maybe we better discuss how to make the perfect electronic drum?

For me Korg have nearly done it already with the Wavedrum.
My dream WD upgrade will have
 - Fixed the feedback issue when used in load environment.
 - It also have an open architecture letting you upgrade the sound engines rather than have to buy new drum every time new algorithm and samples are updated.
 - And it has added an analog filter and VCA.
 - The new drum also let you configure a master and slave units to change kit presets from a single drum or remote/pedal/pad. Better use BT than cable, even cheaper.
 - Oh… please better effect algorithms, don’t skimp on the reverb please.
 - It also need an convenient way to hang the drum on a tom rack when snare basked isn’t appropriate.
 - Option to power from battery or daisy chain power cable. Or optional multi-cable/phantom power.

I would built a kit around a drum like this. This will ensure no central processing unit failing in session. It also come closer to how we pensive an acoustic drum kit.

Next on my short list over vendors doing interesting electronic drums are Nordrum. Sadly they fail terrible with only a stereo out, but build quality are great without use of plastic. Not much love for plastic in instruments. Actually none when I spend more time thinking about it.

On a side note. We are no longer in the times of MTV. When doing kits for other than endorsee one should consider more people will rather have traditional colors and shapes. I believe the color scheme on 2Box gave them added attention, but lost sales as it looks like a toy. Much like the SD2000 kit.

Anyone else?

Looks like the quiz and timeline are recent additions as they weren't there when I first saw the video two days ago but you're right: the quiz is awful and beyond a joke!! I thought the video's tenuous connection to the original Simmons brand was very cheeky at best but their fake backstory is unbelieveable.

I bet GC can't believe their luck. They spent years ripping off another company's reputation, innovation and legacy to boost their own credibility only to be sued and lose. And now they appear to be milking having Dave on board to give themselves the (undeserved) history they craved in the first place.

What orignal settlement ?
For this drumkit yes. Not for the original trademark ripp off which has been some few years of fight and trials...
