Vintage Simmons Drums (UK) Users Group

Hi, new member of the group here, and I was looking for a little help. I recently acquired an SDS-9 brain, and it seems to work correctly except for the click.  While it does work, it's relatively subtle, it adds a sharp tone to the beginning of the note, but even when all the way up it's not overly loud.  Also, the amount of click available seems to be the most minimal on the lo tom.  Before I open it up and start troubleshooting I was looking for verification that the click is supposed to be more pronounced.

It's version 4. I did a factory reset to see if that would have any effect, but that had no effect on the click.

Do you know what
version software it has? It will tell you when you first
turn on. It will flash a 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6

great, i had no idea the sds9 was telling me what software version it has!

apparently i have version 6! i haven't had it open in a while but i still need to change the battery so when i do i'll be sure to copy the eprom and upload it to the files section.

the click on mine isn't overpowering but i don't feel my sds9 is lacking any click.

the most fun you can have with an sds9 is getting an eprom burner and making your own snare/rim samples. i have a cheap chinese tl866 usb and it works great. see the audacity templates i uploaded to the files section. they just need to be 8bit unsigned raw samples and the right length. nothing fancy.

There's actually a few different factory resets you can do on the sds9.

One for the midi mapping, one for the sounds and one for all the other settings.

To reset the sounds turn it on with 'load' held down, the press 'bank' then 'kit'

To reset all settings, turn it on with load held down, then press bank, bank.

To reset midi setting: press mode 3 times to then yes then transmit then receive then yes. Then you probably want to turn off transmit 6 so that midi notes are the same on all kits.

My SDS9 made some wild sounds when I got it, wouldn't receive midi, some of the knobs did nothing And it acted generally strange. It didn't start working properly until I did all three resets. The battery on my unit is dead, so the SRAM was probably full of junk.

Some of the sounds it made when i fot it were really great, but I can't get anything as crazy by programming it again, I'm sure the software limits the range of many settings to keep them sensible, maybe its possible to program it with a wider range of settings via sysex. Its going to be a pain to reverse engineer the sysex format though so I never got Around to it.

If you want a copy of my v6 EPROM let me know, I need a bit of motivation to open up my sds9 and copy it.
The battery needs changing anyway, but for now it keeps its memory when its turned off for a week or so before I have to reset it. Luckily I tend to use it more often than that.
