Does anyone know anything about 3D printing?

Does anyone know anything about 3D printing?

2014-07-31 by gushi1@...

Hi everyone,

I was reading an article in Sound on Sound recently about how Moog have recently painstakingly built an accurate replica of Keith Emerson's modular synth.

What was particularly interesting was that they asked a 3D printing company to recreate some of the switches on the synth "and asked whether they could replicate the correct colours and degrees of translucence. Astonishingly, the printers were able to do so".

Excuse my ignorance here, but I was wondering - what implications does this have for us?

For example, I remember asking on the list if anyone had any spare knobs for an MTM a while back but it turned out they were particularly rare. Is it feasible that a 3D printers would be able to recreate these? Is this sort of thing expensive and are there limits to the kind of things they can print?

Thanks

Chris

From what I know of 3D printing, it's going to be huge. The potential seems to be that if you can design something (using 3D design software) you will be able to send the file to a printing company, and they will produce the part(s) in whatever quantity you need. Obviously you are limited to plastic materials, but I think there wil be a fairly wide range of finishes available. Prices will plummet as the technology becomes cheaper and more widely used. 3D printing is already being used widely in the custom automotive industry (replacing unavailable knobs, dashboard parts etc), and there's no reason why it shouldn't be used in musical applications. Synth manufacturer Teenage Engineering has already adopted the technology:

I'm hoping to re-knob my Pollard Quad syndrum!

Unfortunately if you want custom metal parts, you'll still have to resort to conventional milling techniques which will remain relatively expensive.

Thanks Chris,

That's very interesting. I found a slightly more detailed article off the back of your link:

http://www.wired.com/2012/09/synthesizer-lets-you-3-d-print-your-own-parts/

So basically you need the CAD file and you're good to go? Does anyone have any experience of drawing these?

Also does anyone know what the costs are for getting something like this manufactured? I need 8 MTM knobs and I'm wondering if its worth pursuing.

Cheers

Chris

If you do searches for 3d printer agencies and laser scanner agencies in you local area or country you should be able to find a combination who can accurately scan an original item and then input into the printing.
There may be a need to tweek the cad files but the mtm knobs I recall are pretty tiny so you are at scale of 5:1 rather than 1:5 when printing on paper for a 2d drawing.
it's a topic I'm interested in for jewellery design myself - the cost of the printers and the scanners preclude hobby and small scale so it'll be agency I think

Hi,

As far as I'm aware, the shafts of the knobs on the MTM are different to the SDE, SPM and SDS2000 (I've checked these ones myself). Not sure about the SDS1000 or MTX (or any I'm forgetting with similar knobs).

I haven't tested those, but I _think_ at least the MTX share the buttons
with TMI and MTM and TMI are different since the axis isn't of the same
length.
