clap-trap-ap-ap-ap-ap-ap clapping issue

2014-05-02 by jesper

Hi list,

one of my analogue claptraps has got a clap problem that I just
discovered. I mainly trigger it from external trigger but now and then I
need to tweak the sound and then I use the autoclapping function.
Normally that works just fine but now I can turn it on, but not off. I
need to use the on/off switch to get it back to normal. And then, if I
autoclap again it won't stop.

Since the button obviously works I don't expect dirt or corrosion. I
haven't checked the schematics yet, but it sounds like some switch logic
circuit to me. Anyone who has experienced the same or maybe know exactly
what's wrong?

It's not a big issue, but it's bloody annoying-ing-ing-ing-ing.

It's the mk1 btw (serial 008, so it's an early bird...)

Hi Jesper,

I had this fault already. In my case it was the switch, which (only in MK1) is basicly two switches: If you press it, you open one circuit and close another one. One side malfunction and you cannot stop or start.

Replace it and have fun again.

Best

Michael

Hey Richard.... you wouldn't want to take on a new project, would you? Something like...... oh, I dunno.... a retrofit for the SDS7 Selector Pad?

(I know, sorry.. wrong thread. I'll be good. :-)

By retrofit what do you mean?

1) - a rebuild of the original
2) - a replacement that works the same as the original

1st one would be a problem as I have repaired a couple before but do not
own one

The second IS do-able but in what format is the question;
a) hit it with a stick like the original
b) a keypad type arrangement that could be mounted off say the
snare stand or similar allowing
easy kit selection

Open to ideas but just a bit busy at the moment. Life does take it's
twists and turns - I've had to put a lot
of things on the backburner due to a few health problems of late =(

I would go with:

2) - a replacement that works the same as the original

..in that we could tear the unit apart, if we have to even sacrifice the rubber surface that is glued on and crumbling due to its age to be replaced with a thin piece of silicone Rubber cut to size... with perhaps little paper dots in bright red placed on it to indicate the locations of the "pad switches".

The existing switches/sensors might be replaced with something more robust

The ribbon cable inside the unit might be replaced with a shielded Belden type cable and rerouted in such a way as to allow the silicon surface to sit flat and unhindered by the cable.

Then again, it makes more sense to simply design and deploy a smaller unit that sits near the snare pad as you suggest, perhaps mountable to the mounting arm that enters the snare pad..

Get well soon Richard! Speedy recovery!
