All of the toroidal transformers I have seen in Simmons gear are multi tapped on the primary. (keeps cost and
stock holdings down to do it this way) For the most part, in the later years they used the same transformer in all their designs again I guess for the above reasons. I haven't got any units open at the moment so I can't quote what colors are what (maybe someone else can). I will say that they tend to operate at their maximum power output ratings which tends for them to run rather warm (hot in some cases) This leads to insulation failures and PSU faults. I know as I kept a local transformer rewinder very busy quite a few years back. Every second unit in for fixing had a dud tranny.
If you are in the US and go for the step-up external transformer, please do ensure you get one rated with a high enough "continuous" output current.

i've got one toroidal.there's a piece of tape inside with 115 crossed out and 230 written next to it. like it was changed to be 230 at some point.

You are right. There are two primary coils. I don't know if the two coils are between white/white and brown/brown or a mixture (each coil brown in/white out), but you can measure that out with an ohm-meter. For 120V connect the two ins and the two outs and attach them to the primary input on the PSU board. the other brown and white are connected. open this connection. measure between the brown and the brown soldered to the board, same with both whites. you should get 5 Ohms or something.

You are right. There are two primary coils. I don't know if the two coils are between white/white and brown/brown or a mixture (each coil brown in/white out), but you can measure that out with an ohm-meter. For 120V connect the two ins and the two outs and attach them to the primary input on the PSU board. All of the toroidal transformers I have seen in Simmons gear are multi tapped on the primary. (keeps cost and
stock holdings down to do it this way) For the most part, in the later years they used the same transformer in all their designs again I guess for the above reasons. I haven't got any units open at the moment so I can't quote what colors are what (maybe someone else can). I will say that they tend to operate at their maximum power output ratings which tends for them to run rather warm (hot in some cases) This leads to insulation failures and PSU faults. I know as I kept a local transformer rewinder very busy quite a few years back. Every second unit in for fixing had a dud tranny.
If you are in the US and go for the step-up external transformer, please do ensure you get one rated with a high enough "continuous" output current.

the other brown and white are connected. open this connection. measure between the brown and the brown soldered to the board, same with both whites. you should get 5 Ohms or something.
