What do you think of this analog tom sound?

What do you think of this analog tom sound?

2013-07-25 by EPPHERRE

Hello,
I have just uploaded a demo in MP3 of my analog drum synth....played with my ddrum4 snare cast precision pad.I know,I play very bad but I wanted to demonstrate it's dynamic range and I am variyng parameters on the fly.
I would like to have your comments.....
See you soon

Hello,
I have uploaded a second demo of my analog drum synth,it's the same but with a different filter (24dB/octave instead of 12dB/octave).
What do you think of these sounds??? Do you prefer the first or the second one??
Any comments welcome....
See you soon

I've listened to them both and they are all great..=)My hearing has lost it's top end quite a bit so I'm not the best judge. 24db does sound a bit "sweeter" to my ears. I look at it this way, depending on the design of the filter, ie. what components were used (OTA's, diode based, transistor based, specialized IC based) does the additional cost and PCB real-estate justify any benefit. Given "most" drum synths are based on a VCO generating a sine or triangle wave, the need to subtract harmonics from it become negated. In a design like that the filters main job is to sweep or filter the noise component. Mind you, a couple of designs have used a self oscillating filter as the vco.

So for me, without knowing your design it is difficult for me to answer technically which I prefer. Other than that, go the 24db/Oct.

=)

The second one sounds much more musical to me. I really like the sound of
the attack. The first one feels weaker and more gimmicky than the second
because the filter resonance is so pronounced. I would use the first sound
sparingly as a "disco tom" where dynamics aren't so important, but the
dynamics in the second one seem very useful.

all my best,
- Scott

Hi Thierry, nice work !!

I do prefer the Second one !

I'm not fan of the Noise though ...
that I find not bright enough when you open the filter. Too dark to my taste. Reminds me the DrumX or latest Tama noise.
But I like the fat tone of your synth.

From the Simmons exerience,
I really think that we need a separate filter or even envelop for noise.
Also on the click section...
I'd like often to affect that parameters (attack click noise) keeping a clean tone on the decay.
To be able to get more "woody" textures
Just personnal taste ;)

Therefore when the filter affects the Noise in your demo it's really interesting.

I really like the punch of your low tom/ Kick sounds

Good news anyway !
Bravo
Patrice.
