Simmons knock-off on ebay

Re: [Simmons Drums] Simmons knock-off on ebay

2013-07-14 by Chris Wareham

I'm tempted to contact the seller to see if he knows any more about it. I'd guess it's actually a Japanese built unit, as most Soviet era kit had Cyrillic labeling in Russian and I don't recall seeing anything quite so blatant from East German makers such as Vermona.

Hi,

Just saw this listing on ebay -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SIMONS-SIMMONS-DS8-DS-8-RARE-VINTAGE-ANALOG-DRUM-MACHINE-ELECTRONIC-DRUMS-/321163638540?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ac6d8370c

Now, I know everyone was trying to copy Simmons back in the day, but that is the most blatant rip-off I have ever seen! Possibly an East German or Russian copy judging by the sellers other items. I've never seen one of those before.

Cheers, vout

I knew I'd seen one of these before. Someone posted a picture on the Simmons facebook group. Might even be the same one:

I wonder what it sounds like?

That's just hilarious. I bet it sounds a lot better than the GC stuff
though. :D

I think it's a very limited russian run. They probably made it like this
to make it look "western". Hence the lack of kyrillic. BTW, there are
other east european gear with english writing on it.

It looks like a genuine ESQ1 that was fitted with wooden or similar end pieces. Or a VERY convincing and accurate knock off...

All I know is the kid playing it needs to pull up his pants. Oh, and they could use some music lessons as well.

Re: SV: [Simmons Drums] Simmons knock-off on ebay

I have 2 ESQ1's and I have replaced the ends of one of mine with wood.
Why?,...because the little molded plastic mounts on the ends break off
rendering them useless, the ends fall off..lol

I'd say that is what has happened to that unit in the vid.

Re: SV: [Simmons Drums] Simmons knock-off on ebay

Forget "Back to the Future", this guy is in "Future to the Back".
Sounds like the really early 80's stuff that we probably all thought was cool at the time...

As to musical ability, well we all start somewhere I suppose. Hey, have a listen to some of the pre "Speak and Spell" stuff of Depeche Mode....sounds incredibly similar to what this chap is doing. What Depeche is doing now is a millennium away from those days.

As for DM, in my opinion after Wilder left the 'polished' sound of the band has been lacking. An avid DM fan in the early days, I lost interest after "Exciter" came out. Violator was their swan song I think.... and with Songs of Faith they are my two favourite DM releases..

As for the kids posting their 'jam' on youtube, one would think that a finished and produced song would likely garner a bit more interest in what they are doing? Or does anything and everything go on youtube now?

I've never considered replacing the ends pieces of my ESQ but having seen it done and with my Virus Polar having wooden ends it might look cool.

:-)

Sorry to hijack the original thread..not intended but this is how conversations generally flow in "the real world" as well

I agree about Alan Wilder. I remembered thinking that DM was dead and buried when Vince Clarke left. Alan provided his "classical" training in bringing Martin Gore's ideas and lyrics to a polished result. Sad that he left having felt being an "outsider" in the band. That was a dark period for them, Dave G had "gone off the rails" and the future looked bleak.

I love the whole first album, didn't quite get into the second but really enjoy everything else. Probably my fave songs are;

Just Can't get enough, Somebody, Shout, It Doesn't Matter, Stripped, Walking in my shoes, Precious and I can listen all day to Enjoy the silence. I guess that I love the fact that DM is not a "come back band" they have never gone away and have continued moving forward for over 30 years. Considering they were regarded as a "one hit wonder" band, they are to me in the same ranks as the Stones...probably higher as the Rolling Stones stopped putting out new material a while back.
