Vintage Simmons Drums (UK) Users Group

I managed to get the SDC200 amp that was on ebay UK last week, for the princely sum of £10.50.

Picked it up last night, a huge and heavy beast, and it's in pieces today. Basically a fairly simple ILP 200W amplifier design driving an ILP bass and Celestion midrange speaker.

Only a couple of channels currently work so I'll need to get the rest of them fixed up. In pretty good cosmetic condition but will need to fabricate a new cover for the front.

Don't see many of them around...does anyone have any close-up photos ? Even Google hardly has any, and there's almost no information on the unit itself...

quite interesting to have one, it can be useful for many purpose.
& an interesting analogic preamp / eq tool.
Not so powerful especially on the low end but well ... an honnest piece of gear.

It's a shame the covers must be all dead now ... The foam is falling down in pieces in just a few years.
I already changed mine 1 time & it has to be done again...
The original one was quite sexy.

I am not 110% sure but I assume that the front was made of foam (it pretty much looks like on this scan: http://studio.cordiboy.free.fr/images/Simmons%20SDC200.jpg) which disappears after almost 30 years. I recently got an SDC200 as well and I decided to restore the front with this particular material: http://www.tundtmusic.com/product_info.php/language/en/info/p241_Fender--174--style-schwarzer-Frontbespannstoff.html

I already got it but work is not finished yet. During the last 10 years I have only seen a hand full of SDC200s on Ebay & co. and none of them still had it's front or even the blue hexagon. So some improvisation is demanded.
Does anybody know something about the blue hexagon? Material? Weight?

Thanks for the photo and the link - it does look like foam, which makes sense as the seller said to me the front just fell apart over the years. I had assumed it was chipboard covered with cloth but obviously not, but I might go down that route to restore it.

Hi Patrice - thanks as usual for your comments about the unit - I was after close-up photos of the cover so I could work out the shape and try to reproduce it. But I'd also like to know more details about the blue hexagon...

interesting ... :)

the blue hexagon was foam too but more dense.

mine had it when I got it in 1992, it was still in pretty good shape compared to the all front house one.
I kept it of course but a few years later it was all twisted ...
so after I restored a professional audio speaker Foam & it gave it a very profesionnal stage monitoring look...
It held on 15 years instead of 5 or 6 for the original one...
