[Simmons Drums] Re: Bands ... ???

2004-08-23 by retrolust

ali score of a flock of seagulls used a killer white on white sdsv
kit on tour in 1983 ... i couldn't take my eyes off of it ... new
order & the thompson twins used both simmons drums and the simmons
portakit ... david robinson of the cars used an sds7 kit on their
heartbeat city tour ... the drummer from talk talk used a white
simmons kit (just saw their talk talk video) and the drummer from
kajagoogoo (shy shy) used a yellow simmons kit ... you don't see too
many yellow simmons kits floating around there these days, even on
ebay.

thomson twins portakit went on ebay auctions a while back nice but i could not think i'd use it so idid'nt bid

spandau ballet used a twin bass white sds v (i assume given the time) for a while

in fact any body young beautiful and poppy on the uk's top of the pops in the early 80's used a simmons to mime with

& more obscure perhaps

alex van halen of van halen circa 1984-85 on tour with maybe 10 simmons toms well hidden behind behind ocataban and lots of bass drums soloing on hot for teacher got that on bootleg from my walkman

also the percussion chap with nik kershaw who went on to session with pink floyd - don't know his name but he jumped around a lot and had pads in a huge cage set up but the drummer from nik kershaw went to all about eve and lived not too far from me when i was a kid

gil gilson from squeeze and jools holland had a sdx (which i now have) and a sds7 which was dead when i last saw it and both were giggged live

bill bruford was a big simmons user till pretty recent times ( although i'm sure this has been raised before)

god i miss the 80's

I think I mentioned the monster one-of-a-kind Simmons pads used by Landscape
in the video to "Einstein a go-go"? Looked like giant troll heads...

I wonder what became of them...

Re: [Simmons Drums] Re: Bands ... ???

2004-08-24 by david pinnington

landscape were a jazz band and in a pop sense were one hit wonders
there follow up single featured a trombone solo that all i remebers and it bombed
they were also fameous for the lyricon i belive it was called - the first midi based wind instrument
the kit was a one off and i recall simmons literature at the time as i was working in a music shop in the drum dept that had a sdsv on the cover and the landscape kit on the back along with info to the effect that any shape any size only your imagination
well of course being drummers no one took up the offer being such a staid bunch sat at the back
in the end they vanished

howard jones also used a sdx
dead or alive also had pads on the totp appearence although pete burns (who now appears to have gone all the way with gender reassign ) seemed to be centre of attention with eyepatch and all

david pinnington:
> landscape were a jazz band and in a pop sense were one hit wonders

Well, there early stuff is jazz, but not the later things... But you're
right, "Einstein..." was the hit though a lot of the other singles got a lot
of airplay (and still do).

midi based wind instrument

Well, the original lyricon is not midi, but that doesn't matter...

Cool! :)

Haven't I always said; stupid drummers! ;)

[Simmons Drums] Re: Bands ... ???

2004-08-24 by Phil Murray

I remember that AFOS tour - superb it was !

How about more up-to-date, Danny Goffey of Supergrass had a single
Simmons (mk 4 I think) pad on the left hand side of the rest of his
kit on their latest tour...not sure what it was driving though

Well, most synth/electro acts with self discipline and attitude has...
Borghesia, Nitzer Ebb, Second Decay, Numb, Frontline Assembly to name a
few...

I play Simmons in my two bands Tin\ufffdviel and Machinepop... (SDS-1, SDS-2,
SDS-IV, SDS-V, EPU, TMI)
