Simmons drums

2013-02-13 by misplacedfix

Hello everyone,

I am Mark and I live in the states and am new to the group. Discovered Simmons in the early 80's and have been tinkering with them ever since. Have owned and sold them all! Many, many regrets ... I even had a Simmons Suitcase at one point ... I'd kill to get that rig back!

Anyway, I am considering joining a retro new wave cover band and would love to have a Simmons kit somewhere in my mix ... might anyone here have a basic kit they would be willing to part with? Nothing fancy mind you, I realize the SDSV and 7 are pricey and rare ... would also consider a rig of old Pollard Syndrums but they are just as rare and very expensive I would imagine.

How about that Musicaid up on ebay right now? Haven't seen one of those in years ... nice price tag on it right now, for sure.

Glad to be a part of the group, it is wonderful to see that some things last the test of time.

Best,
Mark

SDS-7 are probably the cheapest among that bunch but they're also most
fragile, especially after these decades. Pollards can sometimes be found
at decent prices on Ebay US, but often just the smaller models. The
SDS-8 and similar sets are probably the most bang for the bucks these
days if you want the hexagonal shape on stage...

I just mailed with a list member offlist. The bidding is riding a
rollercoaster. Interesting to see where that ends...

Yes. I agree with jesper.

SDS1000/SDS800/SDS8 are super cheap still and work with the classy pads

classy.

it's funny that SDS7 are not much money (yet)

is it really because they are fragile? hard to fix?

Forgive the heresy, but if you're gigging and price-sensitive I would
seriously consider the Pearl Drum-X. It's analogue, has 8 presets, sounds
VERY good, and is 100% road-worthy. If I was gigging, I would either go
that route or use an e-Mu sampler. And of course you can use Simmons pads
with the Drum-X, to get the look ;-) What the Drum-X lacks is proper hi
hats and cymbal. Also, it can't do all the wonderful digital mangling that
the SDS7 can. In most ways, it competes directly against the SDS8/800
although the SDS has knobs for real-time tweaking (cool for the studio)
while the Drum-X allows you to program and recall presets (cool for
gigging).

Sorry if I offend anyone!

I was very fortunate to score a complete SDS1000 rig over the weekend from
a very kind member of this forum. Module, pads and rack at a reasonable
cost and I couldn't be happier. It happened much quicker than I ever
expected it to and I avoid eBay and its monopolistic ways. For a change, I
was in the right place at the right time and things worked out perfectly
for me.

Best,
Mark

Greetings gang,

Since the SDS 1000 is one of the few units I don't have any experience with
I was wondering if you folks had any tips, suggestions, working knowledge
you would be happy to pass along.

Thanks in advance.

Best,
Mark

SDS 1000 Is pretty basic. decent 'skin' feature keeps the sounds fresh all be it simple.

It's a good mix between natural and Simmons-y.

If you get one with MIDI it's a bonus, not all 1000's have that and it transmits trigger inputs as well as responds to MIDI.

you can actually record your performance via MIDI and play it back like a normal controller.

COOL.

they are cheap for what they do.

I am looking to add one more vintage Simmons pad to my retro kit, black
shell in good condition ... anyone have one just lying around they would be
willing to part with? Much appreciated

I recently sold a non-functioning SDS7 brain and now have four Simmons pads
(black) and (I think it's Tama) bass pad gathering dust in the basement.
I'd be happy to work something out with you.
