OS Rom library

OS Rom library

2012-03-20 by vout@hotmail.com

Hi,

As mentioned in a previous post, I recently repaired an SDS6 and (two) SDS7 units, main problem was battery leakage.

While I had the units apart, I took the opportunity to read the OS roms and I have made backup bin files. I compared the two SDS7 rom images and they were identical, so I'm assuming all the images are good.

I'm not sure if this has ever been discussed before, but I think it would be a good idea to upload them here as a general resource, perhaps we could build up a library of all OS files (and versions?) for all Simmons gear that uses them. Eproms can become corrupted and without a backup of the OS you are stuffed, and as the average age of this gear gets older, the likelihood of failure increases. Any thoughts?

Cheers, vout

I removed all binaries from my site because I was pissed by the people who started selling eproms with those binaries on Ebay. But (as you know) I share them on demand

A great idea. I'd be happy to share any of the ROMs I have.

Also they're probably not as "desirable" as the actual sound ROMs
so hopefully they won't appear for sale on ebay...

Great! Which reminds me. One of my MTM's sometimes freeze up and I think
it's the one with OS 3 while the two running OS 4 works fine. Is it just
bad luck or does anyone else recognise this? I guess I should try
changing the ROMs between machines as a first test. Bloody annoying when
it keeps feeding contant trigging to the cymbal of my SDS-V!

Hi,

I can appreciate the different points of view expressed here. Overall, I think it will benefit the Simmons community if these files are made available.

I will upload them shortly. I can add more in time (SDS9, MT9, SDE) and hopfully others will too, also if anyone has any detailed knowledge about different software versions, that might be useful too.

Cheers, vout

That´s a great idea!.
I´d be pleased to contribute to this, the only problem is that I have no idea how to read the S.O roms and make backup bin files. So if anyone can explain´the way to do it , it would be great.
Best

Hi,

You need an eprom programmer that can read the chip and save the contents as a .bin file. This is the type I use - ebay item number 270935820718

It's cheap and It reads and writes thousands of different types of devices, also it can test logic chips (4000 series, 74xxx types etc) which is very handy. There are cheaper ones available (and much more expensive too), though I would avoid the 'Willem' types as thay have always been problematic for me. Also be aware that some newer programmers have limited support for the type of eprom that we are interested in (mainly the 27xx family)

You also need to be confident with handling eprom's - they are static sensitive devices and the pins can be easily bent when removing or replacing them in their sockets.

Hope that helps.

Cheers, vout
