Vintage Simmons Drums (UK) Users Group

I was just wondering if people only voted for the simmons kit they own?
or  did you vote for the best one due to experience with various simmons kits.
I know there's a few ppl that own a few kits as do I. 

If the majority of the voting is based on what you own, poll is not very relevant and and should read.... What SD do you own :o)

Hi, I'm in a talkative mood today. But hey... you got me started!

Such polls are never relevant unless you test many kits/brains and/or 
tell the reader which type of music you make/enjoy. So here's a recent 
summary of my feelings for each kit/brain.

I own or have owned:

SDS-1
SDS-III
SDS-IV
SDS-V
SDS-7
SDS-8
MTX-9
ClapTrap (1)
ClapTrap (2)
(+ other not-sounding Simmons gear.)

In the type of music I create (synthpop/electro/EBM-ish...) the SDS-III 
kick the hell out of everything. But not all have had the fortunate 
experience of playing one/with one.
When I want 80's toms I turn to the SDS-V. When I want a simple but 
effective *thump!* to wake up the neighbours I use the SDS-IV. When I 
want digital oddness with a Simmons halo the SDS-1 is my friend.
SDS-7 sure has it's place is a good mix and the clappers fit everywhere, 
everytime.
I've owned several SDS-8's but always sold them for various reasons. 
It's too basic and lame and always defeated by the similar Tama's. The 
MTX-9 however sounds best when turned off completely! >:)

That said, I have not tested SDS-200, -400, -800, -1000, -2000 nor SDX. 
I guess the CEM-built machines are OK, just like the SDS-8 is. I guess 
the  SDX is a goldmine for those that are better drummers than me and 
with a full equipped set.

I love Simmons/MusicAid but have realized that, in my universe, it's 
basically "the older the better" that works. I guess it's that way 
'cause I tend to listen to music from that period too. Leaving the 
Simmons sphere I have Pearl Syncussion, Pollard Syndrum, Star Synare 
etc. All of which are late 70's machines too...

It's hard to dislike a TB-303 if you like acid. It's hard to hate the 
TR-808 if you're into hip-hop. It's hard to ignore the TR-909 if you're 
into early techno etc. And which 70's arena rock fan can ignore a 
minimoog? Therefor... who can say anything bad about a SDS-V if you're 
serious about your relationship with 80's music?! :D

I'm glad you were talkative today Jesper :) and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.
I total agree with you on all points and opinions, and I rofl'd at your MTX-9 comment. 
My question had no malice intent and was quite innocent, my reason for asking said question, I've visited the poll on a couple of occasions and I liked to see what the ppl are saying and if opinions change, and I noticed there's only one vote for SDS4.. my vote :)
overall, on the net there is heavy leaning towards the SDS V ofc with good reason! it is awesome! the only bad thing to say about the V is I don't own one ;) and price's
your collection of electronic percussion items is truly impressive.
and as you stated the the "sds III Kick the hell out of everything.. agreed!
Like yourself, I've got a few other Items, Syncussion and a dual Pollard Syndrum and some Emu items and ofc my  sds 4 and 8.
as an sound engineer I worked with a bunch of acts in the 80's that used other kits so I do have other experience of kits but only from a sound point of view. 

your 808 909 303 remarks, indeed! as I say to youngsters that on occasion I have the pleasure instruct in Audio engineering and technology,  'everything is good!, but not all are suitable in situation 'X" and one needs to find out how,when, why and where  'what is most suited to the situation at hand and how to best achieve good results with WEYH.

I voted for my favorite - the SDS7 - not what I have.
I picked the 7 because it's everything I want out of a drum synth - analog, digital and noise generation, modulation, CEM filters, HH pedal control, 99 presets, selector pad, different module types (2085, Dual Sample), etc...
Currently residing in the studio...

SDS9 x2 -parting them out if anyone needs anything
SDS200
MTM x4
Digital Clap Trap x2
SDE
SPM 8:2
MTX9
EPB

Sure thing. But it's not a drum brain/kit. It's a supplement. I use my 
two to convert midi into SDS-V and SDS-7 signals. But it's darn flexible!
