problems with portakit

2010-06-30 by alfpaches

Hi all
The two portakit midi outputs seem work out. When I plug a midi cable in them the porakit screen changes incessantly from the one kit to another, from the kit to a sequence etc... Its like the portakit is going crazy. Could it be because it needs a change of battery?. Ive restored the initial settings but the result is the same. Thanks in advance

But... are those DIN-5 sockets really midi outs? Are you sure? I have no
porta kit, but I could easily imagine that they're "just" trigger
outputs to drive SDS-8 and similar.

(Not to be rude, but many people think that DIN-5 sockets automatically
means midi.)

Hi, Jesper
They are midi 1 and midi thru/midi 2 outputs, and their function is to trigger any midi drum machine, keyboard,etc.. not the SDS8 sequencer cconnection. Cheers

Hi Berk
I´ve tried it, obviously, with a couple of midi cables with the same result, and both of them are in working order. And the same with Midi in and Midi out both connected. Cheers

OK, strange then... Have you tested with any kind of midi channel filter
or similar?

Hi
Finally the portakit is working. I don´t know why,I don´t know how. The only thing that I´ve made is to connect the MIDI IN and MIDI OUT to my Yamaha RX5 drum machine and then no problem with the Portakit. It´s really strange because first of all I tried with a Yamaha DTX drum trigger module and with a Roland Groovebox with the result that I´ve told you before. Best Regards

Hi,
It might be some midi (filters ? as said before) settings on that or that
unit... as if your multipad had a midiloop..
or even the portakit receiving program changes or sysex ?
Maybe you could check your other units to be sure which is sending what ? Or if
the portakit is allowing receiving things. check well in what midi mode they all
are.
Try maybe with "OMNI OFF" on the portakit to see if it changes anything.
If you can have a look to the MERGE function (SPECIAL MENU) & assignation of
MIDI outputs 1 & 2...
Sorry I can't be more precise ( I haven't got the Portakit in front of me ).

Or is it one more esoteric Simmons Event ;-)

Hope it can help.
good luck
Patrice.
