Transparent SDSV Shells

Transparent SDSV Shells

2009-06-04 by jimstew37

Hi, all:

I recently acquired some SDSV pads from the following ebay listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200347297113

I know that the SDSV shells started out as transparent, and the insides were then painted, but does anyone here know whether any of these pads were originally shipped/sold without paint? I've opened up one of the pads (the one with the hole in the surface), and, unless someone did an excellent job of removing the paint, it looks like these never were painted.

Thanks,
Jim Stewart

Hi Jim,
all SDSV pads had been assembled and painted by hand. Even the acrylic shells had been formed by Simmons. So it would be no wonder if someone had ordered his kit with transparent shells (although it looks strange, just like an aquarium). But the pads on the photo do not look like having been painted before
Best regards

Hi, Wolfgang:

I don't think they've been painted, either. One thing I realize is that there are no "Simmons" decals on the tom/snare pads, but there is a decal on the kick pad. I didn't know that the decals on SDSV pads were on the INSIDE of the shell; I'd never seen SDSV pads in person until I got these. Are the tom/snare pad decals on the inside of your pads? I've certainly seen many examples on your website, but can't tell very well from the photos. I'm just wondering, assuming that these pads had been painted, whether the decals were removed along with the paint. Doesn't explain the kick pad, though.

The real question is whether I should paint these pads to my liking (and I would like to), but, if they are "factory original," I'm reluctant to mess with them. Maybe I should just paint them and not worry about it, because they are kind of ugly this way.
Still, your aquarium comment gives me the idea of putting some plastic fish inside, or maybe some fish decals on the shells! Well, maybe not...

Jim Stewart

Don't paint them Jim. They are very unique (if not ugly). If you must have a colored SDSV padset, I'll trade you one of mine. :-)

Yes, the decals are always on the inside of the SDSV shells. They are transparent as well.

If you hasitate to paint them: Probably you have heard about coloured foils which can be brought on by heat (for example of a hair dryer). I have not worked with that but probably it's worth asking a specialits. I know in Germany Taxi cabs are being "painted" with this foil. If you bring those cabs back to "civil use", you can remove the foil and the laquer underneath appears as new and you wouldn't expect the car having been a Taxi before. You know what I mean?

On the other hand: If I had original but never painted SDSV shells, I would paint them in a rather unique burst tone (of course from the indise). You can butcher an empty plastic Coke bottle to experiment with

I'm not claiming any specialist knowledge here, but be very careful if painting them to make sure that the solvent in the paint doesn't damage the material they are made from. I've a distant memory somewhere of a synth being ruined by a well meaning paint job, but I can't remember the details. Be sure to do a patch test first if there's a suitable spot on one of the pads. A successfully painted Coke bottle isn't a guarantee of success with the shells themselves. Sorry I can't be more specific.

I'm going to spray a circuit bent Alesis HR16, but I have the removed instruction flap to experiment on first.

Bloody cool with a clear set! There were many custom jobs in the old
days. It looks like one of those...

I have heard of those colored foils. Interesting idea, but, if I decide to paint them, I may well go with an orange/yellow sunburst. Or maybe a red/blue/purple burst. Who knows? I've painted a few guitars, which came out pretty well, but I am hesitant to paint these for all the reasons/cautions that folks have posted in response. Now I think of it, a transparent color would be interesting.
Following along with an earlier thread, it would be cool if someone (maybe even me) made up some decent decals and shared them with those group members who needed/wanted them.
Cheers,
Jim

I think it could be a smart idea to left the shells transparent (i think no one has a transparent Simmons nowaday!) and to cover the backside of the wooden hexagonal parts of the pads with a shiny coloured plastic surface (white, or blue, or red... they could be intechangeble too).

Well, what I meant was that there seems to be no trace of any paint on the inside of the shells, assuming that they were painted in the first place. also, the shells are perfectly clear, no evidence of any hazing or fogging from using paint thinner/remover or other solvent.
Cheers,
Jim

Last year I got me an offer for a small edition (100 pieces) of SDSV backside shells. Same material (clear and none painted acryl) with all shapes and drillings for about 30 Euro each (I hope I remeber right). 100 pieces was the lowest possible edition. Just to give you an idea. Of course 5000 would be much cheaper ;-)

If there is any need for replacement parts and you thinks it's worth the money send me a private mail and I can figure out wether the demand is high enough
