christmas shopping ?? - 2 x sdx kits coming up for sale shortly

2008-09-23 by david438580

hi group
i'm working away from uk longterm and returning next week for a short
break
i've got 2 sdx units that basically i am not able or going to be able
to use for a couple of years and so it's time to let them go and scale
back my electro drum collection

basically there are 1 full set original printed manuals
2 sets discs
2 sdx hh pedals
2 original simmons drum racks
1 sdx bass drum (plus another standard simmons bass pad)
5 or 6 symbal pads
approx 10 sdx drum pads various shells colours (mainly white)
i'm a little unsure on sdx pad numbers as i never had space to set up
a full kit with all pads and it's a few months since i've seen them

1 machine belonged to gil gilson - (squeeze and jools holland band)
and the other i'm told was ex howard jones but no evidence but it did
have some very long ambient samples on board when i first used it

in a nutshell i am flagging this up now with a view selling units in
early december
i can sell whole setup ideally or split into two kits one of which
would contain the symbals and manuals

if there is intrest let me know and i can get some details - pictures
etc together later next week when i return to uk

thanks
dp

Depends on taste and how sound orthodox you are... personally I wouldn't
trade an analogue for a digital, even with the hi-tech specs of the SDX.

Yes, I guess so. :)

Hi,
it's not a question of better or worse because it's a totally
different idea. The SDX is a pure sampler customized for drummer's
purposes. SDSV and SDS7 have differnt sound generation.

And yes, it does have midi. You can assign every pad zone (3 in total)
to a different midi note

HI Mark,

The real question is what use are you expecting of your Edrum !!!

a few words about your question...
we can't really compare SDSV & SDX or SDS7 & SDX.!
impossible, it's not the same world at all.
it's not the same technology & use at all.
each machine you're talking about had been the SImmons Flagship at
some point .
I could say the SDX had been the Best Simmons achieved but it's a bit
more complicated .
Jesper would tell you probably the V or the III had been the best
ones...as they are some strong analog device.

the SDX is a weird machine that is allowing you to use samples & quite
a few magic devices as Zone intelligent pads triggerings , filters ,
pitch, panoramic, etc ... values ...
assigned to the triggered samples . it gives a lot of impressive
sounds possibilities with an analog texture very interesting for a
quite digital unit .
But it's far from being an analog device.
It's impossible to get the same sounds & textures as the SDSV. you
can sample it of course, but it won't respond at all like the original
at all.

SDX is a high end product, with an unfinished soft (but there is a
work around it), which gives you a unique signature.
The only comparison would be a Fairlight CMI series III dedicated to
the percussions.
or even a EMUIII ...(they're all 16 bits samplers with high ends
converters & filters)

It has a huge very good sound bank !

Therefore if I want an SDSV , I'm connecting the real one at once... I
don't even think to the SDX.

Yes it's MIDI !

SImmons wanted the SDX being the best kit of the world ! it killed
them, but they did !
today it's still the bestsounding unit even if the pads are far to be
some Roland or DDRUM ones...but the ZI pads gives you this Zoning
facilities that others hardly use.

Don't forget that it's not really a plug & play product. difficult to
think about receiving it & going to play your kit in your favorite
club the next morning.

We could say so many things about this unit !!!

anyway...
I'm not sure... but I hope that helps, ;- )

good luck,
Patrice.

...& 3 layers in the 3 zones : so you have 9 samples per pad !

+ the snare who has again 3 extras layers on the rims
that gives you 12 samples per pad...

I don't remember the midi notes per zone...but per pad ...or Am I
wrong ?

Sdx is a sampler, and quit a sophisticated one
you have zone intelligent triggering from the pads (inner circle, middle
section and outer circle) and you can assign up to 3 different samples to
each zone (makes 9 samples on 1 pad) needles to say you need the specially
made sdx pads for that. Furthermore you can apply filtering, panning, pitch
etc to the zoning principle. So goiing from outside to the inside your pitch
goes up, panning from left to right and your lfo gets wild while the cutoff
goes up and the resonance realy freaks out. Get the picture??
Be aware, this is a SERIOUS beast. prepare your family you will be a lot
behind your kit making the most horrible sound patches. At least tha's what
happened to me. ONe day I found myself in a really tight white jacket with
really long sleeves (just kidding)
hope this helps
And yes it has midi in and out, scsi and 16 monophonic outputs, as well as
stereo out and some footpedal inputs

Well Patrice, thanks!!!!!!!!
after typing for 15 minutes, you did the same just a few minutes earlier
about the midi notes, I don't remember,
You can also use the sdx as a external sampler for triggering from keyboard
and it has a sequencer on board.
that's all folks, there has to be some money earned

Hi Berk You developped what I didn't so Mark will better understand
with your version... ;- )

Personnaly the Sequencer on board never worked properly ... but who
cares ...

oh yeah & I will strongly recommend a compressor again !!!!

As sometimes the kits don't have the same levels at all !!!!!!
& the full open SDX dynamic could explose your speakers or... your
timpanies !!!

Yes, but can the stairs???
It's also worth noting that if anything does goes wrong you're pretty much on your own.
Mine stopped working and I've still not found anyone willing to mend it - and I've
tried pretty hard over the last 15 years or so. I was still paying for it when it went tits up
and it still hurts to see all the snares, toms, cymbals and bass drums (it originally had 3!)
cluttering up the attic - I still live in hope, but it is old technology ...

The same with my Silicon Mallet.
Bought the module, played it twice, went in storage due to a redecoration
off my "studio", went out off the box three weeks ago, played it once and
it just doesnot function. F&^K
I soon hope too find someone who can fix it

What is it with your SDX??

Hey Berk ,
how does the Silicon Mallet sound originally ?
like an SDE ?

I might have in the future a new SM module for you...
Can't tell you more about it now...We need to be patient ;- )

tell me more tell me more, was it love at first sight
lala oehhoe ahhaha etc
It sounds quit horrible actually, kinda like a dx7
very metallic and cold
I'm not gonna use the internal sounds
just hook it up to my A3000 and play all those mad weirdy filtered, distorted
fucked up sounds I've created. What's great is that it has 4 footswithes,
so a lot off action going on, while playing. Just so people don't hear that
my mallet playing is not as good as I wish it was. I build one Midimarimba
myzelf, but by te time it was ready I played better piano/synth then mallets.
But If you can arrange another module, man you'll be my alltime (simmons)
superhero

let me know

If it doenst' running at all with no light , you know probably that
it might be the POwer transformer...

it happened on a new SDS400 I received ...just a very very thin lead
on the transformer was broken ...probably due to the shipping ...
& it happened another time on one of my SDS2000s...

So it might be worthwhile looking well on that direction...

good luck ...

RE: SDX repair

2008-10-01 by Rodn Siddall

Cheers chaps,
unfortunately I'm in Sheffield, U.K. so the Stateside options are out really.
It's the fully loaded version with large (for then) hard drive, 3 snares, 4 cymbals,
God knows how many toms (they're stored in cupboards all over the place) and like
I said, originally, 3 bass drums. I remember feeling I was just starting to get on top
of the bugger... Songs had to be recorded in 2 parts because the Atari would clog up
after 2.5-3 minutes with the amount of information the pads threw out, but it freed
up tape channels, and we only had 8! - when it failed all the work I'd programmed
with it ended up triggering an Alesis D4, losing all the subtlety...

(as can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/mojopin95 if anyone is interested, Ha)

From what I remember it booted up OK, but then, after 30-60 seconds the monitor
went blank (black) and a horrible whine ensued.
I switched it off and on again only to have the same thing happen, and about
a fortnight later I confirmed it hadn't been a bad dream by repeating the process. Not being a technical over achiever that pretty much had me stumped and I
haven't trusted anyone enough to let them just rummage around inside the thing.
I think my best bet is Patrice and buying the schematics, it would be a good starting
point for the couple of people I trust with solder and amp meters, & it would be
great to have it back in the studio - even after all these years,...
I'm not looking forward to ploughing through the manual again though :)

Thanks again,
Rod. ...unless there's a U.K. based SDX boffin ???

Yes, good household rule with electronics. The more dead it seems the
better, 'cause then it's easier to find the problem which is often in
the power circuit area.

I'll never forget the broken SDS-V I bought on Ebay. The switch was
broken and no matter how you pressed it, it stayed in the off position.
Talk about an easy fix and good money spent. :D

Betr: [Simmons Drums] RE: SDX repair

2008-10-01 by Berk Aarts

After the monitor went blank/black, did you still have sound??
in other words was it possible to play on the pads and hear sound from your
outputs??
if not, did the harddrive still turn??
if not, 99% chance the powersupply went dead, a large capacitor?? was there
any smoke??

Berk

Firework guaranteed.

I'm no expert, but I'd say SDS-9...

I believe they are the SDS9 series pads, with the "free-floating" centers.

All the same pad type ...Mark IV ?

Weird,

I just acquired th R-5 Human Rhythm Machine ( as a throw in ) along with some PD-31's, & a Midi KITI & rack from a dude here locally on Friday.

Yeah, I'd have to say they look like 9's but would still warrant sending the question to the seller since the pic is so fuzzy. I'd question their overall condition as well. They look really nice though.

Re: what simmons is this

They are SDS9/1000 pads for sure, you can tell by the thick black
rim and the large Simmons logo on the shells of the tom pads. I
have 4 of these kits, 1 red, 1 blue, 1 white and 1 black.....I
really want a yellow one though....if anyone has one for sale let me
know....PLEEEEEASE!!
