The hard pads were only outfitted w/ the SDS-5. Any other model was
sold w/ rubber over wood. The newer they are, the better the rubber and response
curve.

I didn't know that - thanks. Are all the ones with plastic surfaces equipped
with XLR-jacks? I have rubber faced pads but the bass pad is the plastic
type and has XLR out...

The SDS-5 pads had XLR. The SDS-7 had XLR as well but were the first w/
rubber. The SDS-8 came out right after the "7" as part of the same wave of
products and they had 1/4" jacks.

Hmm, interesting- the set I just bought has the 1/4" jacks... they're still in the shop until I pay off the layaway... the last time I saw them they had some-what of a hard plastic
playing surface. Their shells are plastic, and black. The pads feel very light-weight.

I thought I'd never see myself owning a Simmons kit. The last time I ever played them
was back in 1986-87, when I was stationed in Berlin (Germany)... a drummer-friend
owned a Simmons kit with the brain (I forgot which model, the pads were kinda beige-ish
off-white, and the brain was grey/blue- the kit was 5 pads. He mounted them on regular
heavy-duty Tama stands.)

I really was never a fan of Simmons Drums until now that I bought this kit because I wanted to see how I could incorporate it into my acoustic kit, for Live and Recording
purposes...
And now that I've discovered there are Simmons Fans on the net, and have met this
Yahoogroup devoted to Simmons Drums, I am eager to learn more about the product.
And hopefully this will help me get over my "MIDI-phobia" and help me understand MIDI, the same way as I've gotten over my fear of Computers and Digital Technology.

Thanks for sharing!

xoxo- Tony

So then I have an SDS-8 kit + a SDS-V bass pad (which I think is mark II
since it has metal edges...).
