8" skins on early pads?

8" skins on early pads?

2008-02-23 by jesper

Being an electronics freak and no acoustic drummer I'm having trouble
measuring the skins of the MusicAid pads. Am I looking for 8" or 9"
skins? 8, right?

A friend found the exact match for the internal speaker/pickup at
Farnell, 0,3 W and 64 Ohms... cheap as hell too. :D

cheers,

Betr: [Simmons Drums] 8" skins on early pads?

1 inch is approx 2,5 cm
never heard off 9 inch skins so 8 inch most likely (20 cm)
greets Berk

I guess I'll remove one and check with a local music store. Too bad most
new skins are clear. :(

There are 9" heads but mostly for other kind of percussion instruments.

Hi Jesper,
they are 8 inch. The original Premier heads are not available anymore, specially not with
the original Premier logo (I already asked ;-)), but white coated heads 8" are available from
Remo:

Don't know which colour you are thinking but white shouldn't be a problem.
If you like another colour, buy a clear one, spraypaint the skin on the inside(!),
let it dry and then put it on the pads. That way the paint won't come off
to easy, and you can make the colour you like

good luck (1-a-B drummer, hahahah, just kidding)

greets Berk

Cool! Thanks! I was checking both Musicstore and Thomann before and also
swedish store Jam since they have a store nearby. I'll keep you posted,
but the speakers are at my friends place. I'm looking forward to
restoring all six pads to the same condition.

I was thinking about that too... small messages etc could be cute. Or
simply stencil "bass", "snare" etc to annoy stupid drummers in a live
environment ;)

Hello Jesper,
and if you have the pads already open, I suggest to replace the old pickup
speakers with piezos. The original speakers pick up the surrounding noise
like monitors or bass amplifiers too much.
Regards
Michael

Well, the thing is that I like the feel of the speakers better. The
reaction to the impact is different imho. I also enjoy the feel of
having a restored pad and not a modified.

Today all the pads for my SDS-3 set have acrylic hardshells to match a
SDS-V set and hence the speakers inside have been exhanged for piezos
already. I plan to go the other way.

I mainly use pads in the studio this far and if I ever go live I have
enough junk with piezos to gig ;)

But thanks for the tip anyway!

or annoy soundmen!
I once had a dude who tried to mike up my octopad. No kidding. This guy miked
up my drumkit while i was still putting it together, so I hung my homemade
octopad in place (which did not look like a normal drum at all) and before
i know it this asshole comes up with 2 mics to mike it up. As you might have
guessed, this was my worst gig ever, the band sounded totally crap, but
it's still a great story to tell my audio students (how not to...etc)

Good luck with your project and keep us informed

greets Berk
