Best monitor sistem for simmons sounds

Best monitor sistem for simmons sounds

2008-01-10 by giamesimmons

Hi all,

do someone of you have experience with simmons drum in live contests ?
I mean: what is the best monitor system to let the drummer and the
others band member hear the punch of the kick and the "feel" of the
drum ?
I was about to buy a small system with a sub 12' and a mid-hi range
speaker 10' mounted on it.
Do you think it would do the job ?..
I'm talking about medium stages, like pubs or discos, where you don't
have a sound tech at your service and you have to bring your own setup.

Howdy Giame,

I do alot of gigs both big and small, obviously with your big shows
you'll have your very own monitor send which will sound massive!

For smaller shows a powered wedge/monitor is the best, I actually
have an 8 DI unit in my rack and that can double as a line mixer
which means I just plug in powered monitor and can mix my own
foldback.

I'd go for a 12" speaker at very least, you'll need something to
handle the bottom end of you kick and toms.

If I'm using a speaker like this I think it's best to put it on your
floor tom side facing at your head, you'll feel the "Thump" from
your kick drum then!

Cheers,

Matt.

Hi Giame,

here start the all problem of electronic world ...

about the monitor you have to test there are no rules, except maybe
that you need a good speaker for the bass frequencies...
I would recommend a 16' but it depends ...SWR are making very good
low end with small speakers...

Anyway you'll probably have to premix you Simmons & have different
EQs on theToms , BD & Snare ...
a SPM8 would be perfect for it & especially for the Simmons grain...
Personnaly I'm using a multiband compressor behind the
premix ...that's very important with these beasts...
& of course you'll need a very good & fast amplifier ...

Now it depends what you're asking to your system , what band... , &
if you're playing loud ...
But the minimum is to have a comfortable level as loud as your
acoustics elements...
knowing that with our fellows musicians, our bass drum is often
disappearing after 3 songs ...
Personnaly I 'm miking the bass drum too....
so anyway , you need a quite sufficient level & it requires quite
some artillery in the end..

But this is just my advice ...

Good luck ,
Patrice.
