Resurrect that SDS7

Resurrect that SDS7

2008-01-06 by Rob

Ok, so I've plugged in that SDS7 I had since 1986, and it powers on etc but no sound comes
out. I pulled all the modules and the card with the battery and it looks like this:

http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=210159546/PictureID=4404152712/a=720
87350_72087350/t_=72087350

http://www2.snapfish.com/slideshow/AlbumID=210159546/PictureID=4404152713/t_=72
087350/a=72087350_72087350

Looks like some corrosion on the battery. So- Simmons made the battery permanent?
  What is it?

Thanks!

Is there any juice left in the battery? Otherwise changing that would be
a start at least.
If it's dead, the memory with sounds is gone, but you could always try
making a new patch from scratch. That ought to work without the
batteries - right guys? That should give an idea if something else is
broken. With a basic patch I think you should get sound from the
analogue part of the SDS-7 anyway since that shouldn't depend on the
battery.

Not sure if there is juice in the battery or not- I'll have to get an ohmmeter- I'm just
getting started.

I'm surprised that the thing is soldered right onto the card- I would have thought
Simmons would have made it easier to change. Unless they expected the SDS7 to just be
disposable...

OK, a cheap one works well for those tricks too...

Well, back in the early 80's everyone did this. All synths are designed
like this and as you say, in a way noone expected them to last more than
6-8 years maybe which is a normal life expectancy for a battery soldered
in place.

The battery is a rechargable 3.6V nickel-cadmium cell.

Replace it with a battery of this type :

Good one to have in the archives - thanks!
My SDS-7 toured a lot during the 90's so I guess it's still in a pretty
good nick as far as the battery goes.
