Does anybody know where to find one of the SDX workstations touchpads
and a cursor-ball setup from the early 90's..I worked with a
band "Valentine"..and we had the no- onboard memory prototype...then
had one with memory..They're hard to find..Our rep back then only had
sent prototypes to Bill Bruford and Alex Van Halen at the tim...kinda
looks like the old PET computers in black .. from the early 80's

Larking Audio - search for Larkings List UK - currently have an SDX
on their stock list inc pads. Make D0N Larking an offer! And no I
have no personal interest in case you're wondering - tell Don 'Seve'
told you of the SDX ....

Hello everyone,
Just a quick question to anyone who has time to answer - does anybody
know any details about the work that Simmons did with Rick Allen from
Def Leppard after his accident? I recall reading that Simmons and
someone from Ludwig helped construct a kit to adapt to his new playing
style. I also remember hearing that Akai were involved, so I was
wondering if SDX technology was used or if the work with Akai inspired
the SDX. Information is sparse, which seems a bit ungrateful to me, if
Simmons did help the guy go on to sell however many gazillion albums.
Also I wonder if it is what inspired Simmons to move into the
prosthetics research. I am not a huge Def Leppard fan, (and I
apologise if I offend Mr.Allen in any way), but you can't question
their success and I am a fan of the SDX. One was auctioned on e-bay
about a 18 months ago, when I had just returned to the UK - I didn't
bid for it and I think it went for less than GBP400 - I was gutted!

Re: SDX

Hi,
as far as I know (I might be wrong) he did not use any SDX equipment.
He used the Mark IV pads which came with the SDS9/1000 and MTX9
brains. As he only had one arm he used a couple of trigger pedals
named "Shark" if I remember right to play fills with his left food and
right arm (was it the right arm???). I don't know what he triggerd but
definetely no SDX.
I hope this poor half knoledge is worth the reading...
Bye

If I am not mistaken, Rick Allen from Def Leppard played a Simmons SDS 7 that utilised a TMI on the periphery. I seem to recall seeing a unit claimed to be his sold on eBay several years ago.

Yes I seem to recall reading that somewhere too. I also think an MTM
was involved somewhere and they were doing such amazing things with
it that Simmons / Davidmann didn't even design it to do !

Most of all I have an enormous respect that he came back after this nightmare. Imagine yourself loosing your left arm! I don't know what I would do in such a situation. Stay in the house forever? Commit suicide? Drowning in drugs and alcohol? I think this man had really power and will, this is very impressing.

Being left-handed I certainly would see a trouble there, but I think
otherwise that my life wouldn't change too much. I can program my synths
with just one arm. Harder to carry heavy parcels from the post office
though. ;)

Re: SDX

2007-09-14 by Rod Siddall

Hi, speaking as a native of that 'magnificent musical town', I seem
to remember an article in 'The Star'(local newspaper), about the
drums being modified by Pete Hartley (who worked on the Hartley-
Thompson guitar amps). There may have been others involved, but not
being a fan of their music, I wasn't too interested. I did know Pete
years ago though, so it stuck in my mind.
Allen was heading for a farmhouse just outside the city when he
overturned his car and my partner rented the same place just after
the band moved out. She was suprised to find the whole place covered
in (dog?) shit, even the curtains... er.. Rock'n'Roll lads! - so
strange seeing how they all came from such good backgrounds - but
there again, they where much better known 'round here for posing
infront of large shop windows and looking at themselves, than for
any music.
Anyway, Pete still has a shop under his own name on London Road, so
a well placed 'phone call could probably end anyones torment, but
personally...
By the way, my SDX coughed, spluttered and died a few years back.
Does anyone know a trusted (and ideally localish to Sheffield)
repair shop? Does anyone still service these things? And how much do
they charge to take a look??
Cheers, Rod.

Hi ,

from what I know Rick Allen used SDS9/ SDS7 & probably an MTM (or TMI )
After his accident , Simmons did a special kit for him .
He effectively used a few SHark Pedals to replace his left arm.
We can hear all thefat analog Simmons tomtoms' sounds on Hysteria ,
"In the round in your face "'s live is clearly Simmons printed too ...
in 1989 , I've seen him in modern drummer advertising for ddrum, & recently
hart dynamics pads...
after the SImmons era he went onto some FORAT samplers.
but yep I never heard of him using SDX...
Hope that helps,
PAtrice.

I don't think AKAI inspired the SDX ...
AKAI democratised the samplers yes !
the SDX was clearly a FAIRLIGHT for percussionist & drummers but also for
producers !
As Fairlight the goal was to do the best thing available at that time ...&
the price was consequent...
AKAI was bringing the sampling affordable ...after Fairlight & Emu ...

Information is sparse, which seems a bit ungrateful to me, if
Simmons did help the guy go on to sell however many gazillion albums.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Dave probably helped him to be able to drum again ...& to come back in Def
Leppard ...
with the Huuge sound they needed !
they had the huge producer (Mutt' Lange) they needed to sell the "gazillion
" albums ....
But Rick did the fucking job to come back , & the band composed some
incredible singles... that millions of people loved.
There's no need to love them or not , but they had an incredible story !
Simmons had been a small part of it , but a solid one.
iHe probably gave them the chance to stay all together , quite an important
aspect I think, when you have to run all over the world ...
especially that they had a guitar player death to manage as well ...

anyway, hope that helps ,
Patrice.

Sort off.
The guy is checking out what he has 2 offer
he thought that he had 3 or 4 toms 1 bass and 1 snare and 2 cymbals and as
I beleive the complete library off sounds (got it from Dave through Mr Bruford)
he's checking that all out, and in what condition the SDX is. It has been
in it's case for years now. If it works and everything is fine ,I'm one hell
off a lucky bastard. Sunday is the great pickup. If it doesn't all work,
I'm not gonna
be the one to fix it.
I'll keep you guys informed

600 indeed
the guy who sells it, works for a theatre company for whom I've worked also.
That's why he want to "keep it in the family" even though I don't know him.
The guy also wants to sell quickly, there was another guy who wants to buy
but it took to long. So we had a kind of gentlemans agreement. Perhaps the
deal is still on, we'll see.I'll keep you guys informed.

Berk
