Are _all_ the noises dead? I thought the SDS-8 used separate channels for
each voice. Long time since I owned one but...

Have you checked the separate outs through a decent mixer or by headphones?
The impedance standard is different know from back then...

The output issue might be either just dirty or crappy jack or the amplifier
circuit might have died, not uncommon and never expensive with a decent
tech.

Sad story though... :(

The noise source is probably common to all voices. That's how
it's usually done.

Well, it *does* make some sounds, but only the tone, not the noise
component. Plus amp output is *very* noisy, one side only, and quiet at
that. Kick drum preset comes out as a low quiet "crack...le", preset
snare is inaudible but switch to "user" and you can get the tone at
least. Preset toms are a *very* low pitched short quiet "bloh" sound.

If I wasn't a grown up I'd be having a cry about now...mmmmwaaaaaaaH!

Ive never looked inside a SDS8, but in the SDS5 each voice card has little trimmers to set the factory sound (aside from the 3 channels on the front) , you can make the factory sound to be whatever you want it to be. are there trimmers inside the sds8?

Dunno. Will have a look later maybe. Still doen't solve the noisy amp
though....is there an experienced Simmons service tech in Vic?

BTW have enjoyed your work over the years, especially Real

Ken!

If you're not into tech stuff yourself it sounds as you need it fixed by
someone skilled but not too expensive. It might take a few hours to fix but
I bet it's nothing really bad.

Or you have to find another and keep this for spares. :(

Re: Good News/Bad News SDS8

This is true. the SDS 8 and most, if not all simmons brains used a
common noise generator. If one side of the stereo out is bad, that is
another problem. If you can find someone who knows what they're doing
it should be able to be fixed rather inexpensively. If not, it could
be more trouble than it's worth. I have prints if that would help but
I'm in the us. I could probably fix it but, again I'm in the USA. Let
me know if I can help.

Hi Ken,

Just a quick hello from a fellow Aussie. I'm in Melbourne. Proud
owner of an SDS-8 and a box of yet-to-be-racked V modules. I use the
individual outs of a 707 to trigger the 8.

I looked up the specs on the synth chips in the 8. There's an unused
filter resonance control :)

Cheers,

Clae.

Oh I see from a later reply that this info might come too late for
Ken, but the answer is "yes". The factory presets are set with
trimmers next to each pot on the main board. My guess is that some
time in this module's life, they got redefined. Even the volume and
pan settings might be fixable.

I gather that the "user" patches sound normal? They and the presets
use the exact same synthesis circuits.

Clae.

Re: [Simmons Drums] Good News/Bad News SDS8

Heya - an update...and "HI!" to fellow Aussie Clae :-)

My SDS8 has been repaired and is in transit from Melbourne back to
Brisbane. Apparently several busted solder joints on the main board,
the service guy says it's all working perfectly now (fingers crossed).

BTW this guy (Derek at Logitronics if you ever need repairs Clae -
he's worked on several SDS8's incl. Canham's) checked out the voltage
change done by my local service tech, says it's a good job. So
changing the voltage from 220 to 110 (or whatever) and vice-versa on
an SDS8 *is* just a simple re-wiring job.

I'll update in a couple of days when my module arrives...

Cheers,
Ken.

We keep our fingers crossed for you...

In the next few days I'll hear from former Ultravox live drummer if my
alternative shipping idea from the UK will work. I wouldn't mind some finger
crossing there either since prices has gone up recently at the "normal"
place...

How weird is an SDS-7 with eight card containing the same octaban sound?! ;)

Cheers,
Ken.

Cool Ken - congrat's!

I just resurrected the SDS-IV and when testing my other SDS-IV that one
died. I guess all the 3086's are dying at the same time... Good thing
they're still around though they're getting harder to find...
