By the way: Does anybody know with which brain(-s) the Hexahead pads
have been delivered with or were they some kind of stand alone products?

Just some extra infos added to Jym's answer
  > 1. which models started using the rubber heads that are more
  comfortable to play? are
  > the heads replaceable?
The first of two generations of rubber pads was introduced with the
SDS7 in 1984. These pads featured non flexible rubber heads, XLR plugs
and the screws on the shell side, custom colors available like blue
burst (the one on Ebay last week was far to cheap :-( )

The second generation came with the SDS9/1000/2000/200/400/800/MTX9,
featured 1/4" plugs for those series, "swimming heads", changable
backside shells, attachement screw inside the rubber head. These pads
were part of the SDS7 also from that time on (I guess 1986), the only
difference where the XLR plugs instead of jacks. Available colors were
the standard colors you already mentioned.

As already mentioned: The XLR pads have been delivered exclusively
with the SDS7 which has always featured XLR plugs on the brain side
also. Technically (talking about the second rubber headed generation)
  they are identical

  no

  what kind of outputs do
  > they have?
stereo 1/4" jack for toms and some kind of 4 pin XLR for dual trigger
  snare pad

No, they only take British Premier pedals (harhar, joking..., my Tama
  pedal works also)

The SDS-7 came with the new rubber heads and XLR connectors, like the
SDS-V. I've had some SDS-7 pads since 1986 and never wore them out,
but I take care of my stuff pretty well. Based on how the pads are
built, you could replace the covering material yourself if found a
suitable replacement. Best would be find more pads.

<<<<<<<<<<<Remember there was 2 generation of PAds for SDS7....It's not the same rubber ...
& also for the SDSV ...

Simmons later issued 1/4" plugs on the pads for the SDS-9 and all
those other models. Don't know if there was a big reason other than
  the cables were cheaper.

<<<<<<<& professional reliability I suppose , like DDrum acoustic trigger ....

Sadly, the ZI pads work only with the SDX and nothing else. They don't
have Piezo sensors, but use a force-sensitive resistor sheet, similar
to the technology for touch screens. The company that made the FSR
sheets no longer has the templates, everything was returned to Simmons
long ago. Extras were eventually consigned to landfill. Sad.

<<<<<<<<<<Except the Bass Drum & the rim of Snare pads ...they are piezo !
as the input on the SDX recognise piezo at least on the BD voice input & iput 3 I think...

  > 5. can u use DW kick pedals with Simmons Kick pads?

Sure, you can whack 'em with pretty much anything.

    <<<<<<<UNIVERSAL PADS !!!
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<Anyway every pads of the planet are using the same piezos (ddrum, yamaha, roland etc...), except the SDX & KAT FSR PADS ...
& maybe the actual Roland pads...
  hope that helps ,
  Patrice.
