From midi you mean? Paul is the man behind midi2sds and is preparating a new
batch of those (I want another). Otherwise you can use Pro-Kadi from Kenton
with minor mods to the Simmons or simplr any 5 volt trig. Even short and
loud sounds from another drum machine or sampler works etc.

Well, specify and we'll help! :)

It may be possible to do a midi upgrade to your SDS1000.
Mine had unused holes in the back for midi sockets, and
when I discussed it with Soundunit, they sold me an upgrade
kit. I don't know if all revisions of the SDS1000 were
upgradeable or why they didn't supply them with midi already
installed.

The circuit board and processor were midi ready - The main
part of the mod was to solder in DIN sockets, an optoisolator
and a few passive components. I can scan the documents
if you want to mod yours.

The midi is fairly basic (unless there are some hidden options I
don't know about), with fixed note numbers, but it workss.

Anyone got the midi spec for these things?

I scan the information and send it to you (and to Paul
Maddox). I might get it done at the weekend, but no
promises.

Are you competent with a soldering iron?

The SDS9 was the first Simmons box to talk Midi. You'll
probably need an external box (like Pauls) for the SDS8.

Hi!

I read about the MIDI2SDS-II on your homepage, Paul. It looks as if it has to be soldered into the SDS... or can it be used as an external box?
I'm trying to trigger my SDS5 with the single-outputs of an Yamaha RX5 but that doesnt work properly. Too little output :-( So I would be very interested in uying an external box that could trigger my SDS5 or SDS7.

Any chance... ?

I did do a MIDI2SDS-II PCb/chip kit which let you do this, I've sold out, but I
will be doing a newer version soon.

yeah, you need to add a DC in and 8 trigger outs, but thats how I use mine, it
just sits in a little black box.

Sadly, I don't have any left, I'm going to be doing some more in a month or two,
I've got a couple of things I need to get finished first than I can do the next
version, which will have more adjustment over the outputs so they can trigger
things better, and I also plan to add a simmons trigger din connector (less
wiring for my sds8)

Paul!

I'll wait for you offering the new version because I simply have "two left hands" as we say over here... the only thing I'm able to do with a soldering iron is burning my fingers ;-) So I won't be able to build one myself... even though I printed out the schematics. I know a guy who repairs my old synths... maybe he could build one... I'll ask him anyway.
But please: send a mail to the list when you finished your new version. I'm sure you can sell a couple of those boxes.

hehe, yeah, he'll be able to, it'll be around 5 chips and a few resistors, it
should be straight forward.

Simmons TMI is cheapest and coolest if you want trigs to turn into midi...
If you mean the other way around I recommend Paul's stuff... like I said.

You can add midi to everything, even your coffee machine if you want. It's
just a question of time and money. Simple midi triggers are quite easy.
Dynamically controlled stuff harder, but still easy with Paul's stuff (if
you can live with the delays in the midi chain).

His new version will accept higher trigger voltages, but midi2sdsII does the
work as well, though not with full "impact". I built an external box to be
able to patch the outputs around to my different drum synths. Have tested it
with SDS-V, SDS-2, SDS-IV, EH Crash Pad, Tama TS-305 and Pollard Syndrum
Quad 478 this far and it's only the Pollard that won't accept the trigs.
I've checked it on an oscilloscope and will fiddle around with gate time to
see if it can be helped.

But as someone else asked someone else here - are you familiar with a
soldering iron it's not really hard. If not, it's science fiction! ;)

Expect some delays though... Don't know if it's my setup and/or the midi2sds
but I can clearly hear the delays from pressing a key to hearing the *piouw*
from one of the synths...

Hi Jesper,
about Delays , don't you have any midi patch bay ?
Do you have an MTM ? (bc it can produce a delay if crossing too many parameters between the trigger & the brain especially if the signal is routed through midi options ......

I hate to say this, but, it must be your setup.
I've sold over 50 of those, and no-one has reported any delays.. I've also got
one driving my SDS8, and I don't notice any delay.

No... BUT... I do have multiple outs on my computer so. I haven't
experienced this with other units in this matter. My OSCar can be kind of
slow, but that is the envelope in the OSCar I guess and you always excuse
your love child! ;)

Nope...

Masterkeyboards -> computer -> assorted midi devices, mostly midiconverters

But I'll test a little with other config's to see if I get better response.
Otherwise it doesn't matter since I sequence most of my music anyway...

I've put a parts list for the SDS1000 midi upgrade in
the manuals section for you to try. It's over ten years
since I did the mod, so I can't remeber much about it,
but I think the SDS1000 was designed for midi and they
just didn't fit the components. I'll scan a component
layout when I have time, but any competent tech should
be able to do the upgrade from the parts list.
