If it's "just" the pad that is wacko, I'd open it and check if the piezo element has died. Piezos are cheap and easy to find. They basically generate a voltage that is larger if you hit harder (i e louder). Don't trash anything 'cause it's dead. The electronic parts inside a pad can easily be counted. 1-2-3? If you mean that there are problems at the other end (verifying this with other pads etc) it can be trickier, but everything can be repaired.
